A quote from cms..the original boards creator..

He has a board eulogy over on the Watercooler and it's fun to read about how the boards got started and some of the things he and other programmers went through to keep it going. He also explained what "mjeyds" means which has vexed many of us for years.

There was one thing he said which is very poignant and sweet...

I once spent an evening in a darkened restuarant patio overwhelmed to tears as a kind man explained to me his young daughter, hospital-bound and dying of cancer, had used the Harry Potter IMDb boards as her main social life in the final year of her life, and how much that had meant to him and her.

I just thought I'd re-post it because well...because it's exactly what the message boards have come to mean.

Thank you CMS...

I think the Boards were like that for a lot of people. I know I am one of them.

The Boards & the wonderful people here got me through some terribly sad, dark times, and I am still devastated that They decided to take them down.

Yes to both of you, and thanks to cms and to jodilyn for giving us that quotation. I think for sick and disabled people, yes even socially disabled people that message boards provide connection--and we all need that.

Col was one in a million. While he was wrestling with this beast of a system, he took time to interact with us posters. I think he lurked on a lot of our boards, because when I chatted with him now and then, he seemed to know a lot about us. No matter what upper management was trying to do, I always thought Col was on our side, our friend in court. He must have realized early on that this was no ordinary forum. The people who came here, stayed here, became friends and family, and it became a part of people's lives. Well! so Col invented Facebook before it was FB, this is where Mark got his inspiration!

It is a nice article.
Not to be picky but I thought FB was a rip-off of MySpace. Does MySpace even still exist? I haven't heard about it in a long time.
I liked that IMDB had so much all on one website.
