The police chief said there was no reason to stop his car, the officers were the sole aggressors and they acted together, the beating was brutal as he called out for his mother.
His mother said that he weighed only 150 lbs because of Crohn's disease.
What happened sounds vile. I can see a very long sentence for them since it appears he was basically minding his own business when these officers decided to brutalize him.
So the police chief is now the jury? Or does this press cause the trial to have to be moved to another town to get a fair trial?

shareYeah, it's weird. Some outlets are saying that he has no rap sheet and others are saying that they just don't know yet if he has a rap sheet or not. And if he does have a clean record, that's what makes it so odd why he would resist the way he was. Maybe it'll come out that he's autistic or something and doesn't understand social cues the way normal people do. But I would think that if he was autistic or had some kind of lower mentality that that would have already probably been mentioned, especially by his family.

The footage that they're showing now picks up right when they're pulling him out of the car. Cops don't usually pull people out of the car that way unless they've been acting a fool, e.g., not pulling over when they're told, driving like a crazy fool and almost hitting things, stuff of that nature. The pre-footage release narrative is that it was a sick vicious beatdown a la Rodney King. This is definitely nowhere near as bad as Rodney King. He was being beaten incessantly by billy clubs. The two negative things that I see are an excessive use of pepper spray, and then that one cop kicking him in the face. Those are the two things that probably led to his demise. We'll see if he had any kind of drugs in his system that may have exacerbated that eventually I guess. Why is it so hard for people to just do what they're told? If you're told to get down, then get down. If you're told to lay on your stomach, then lay on your stomach. If you're told to put your hands behind your back, then put your hands behind your back. Why fight that when you know that you're just going to make it worse? Why get up and try to run when all they're trying to do is get you to lay down on your stomach so that they can handcuff you? Five cops should have been able to subdue him. But because of the way things are now, they can't use the tactics they were using in the past. Like putting their knees down on his back, things of that nature. So they go directly to the pepper spray instead. It looked like that they didn't want to really touch him to try to subdue him with those certain tactics that are a no no these days. So they used excessive pepper spray. They should have used the taser gun. I only saw them try to use it once when he got up and ran away. Pepper spray is not the best option because everybody in the vicinity gets that pepper spray in their faces, eyes, nose, and mouths. I know I've used pepper spray before and I felt it and was coughing and wheezing and all that jazz. My opinion is that they put out the narrative that it was a horrendous beat down and fired the cops almost immediately in order to try to dissuade rioting. A preemptive strike, if you will. I would think if there's going to be charges the one that kicked him in the face is the one that really deserves the harshest charges because that you just don't do. And charges for the excessive pepper spray.
EDITED TO ADD: Man, some of these channels are fucked up. I just saw another version where they showed more on a different show and there was a whole hell of a lot more beating involved in what I just saw compared to what I commented about above. Yeah it was brutal. Although why these are the channels don't show it all is fucked up.

Good analysis. It's an unfortunate situation that could have been avoided with compliance by the young man. It would be helpful to see video from before the initial interaction. He ran from the cops so I wonder if he was going to fail a sobriety test. Did they get a chance to test him for drugs? Anyone driving under the influence is a threat to society.
I would only support a murder charge against a cop if it was obvious that the cop was trying to kill the person resisting arrest. Being a patrol cop is a difficult job and recruitment/retention will plummet if cops are regularly sent to prison for roughing up a criminal, junkie or lunatic. It doesn't look like there is evidence to convict all of the cops of murder. An excessive force charge would be appropriate for the cop or cops who were slugging him after he had been restrained. Memphis did a crappy job of releasing video since we don't have a complete picture of how it all went down. One or more of the cops in the second encounter mentioned that the young man tried to grab his gun and that would have justified the use of additional force.

This one shows the street camera video all the way up until the ambulance gets there. Before it came, the 2 medical personnel were just standing around chit chatting with their thumbs up their asses for the longest time before they finally decided to do something for him. That's why they also got fired.

He had to have been on drugs, why else fight something that is inevitable? Unless he was trying to get on video for a pay day. In which case I would suggest choosing a scenario where the cops look like the ones that arrested Floyd, because those cops aren't going to beat you to death. Resisting arrest with 5 cops that are all 50 pounds heavier than you is a bad decision.
Pepper spray did look like it got all over the cops as well, pissing them off even more. Plus who knows how getting continuously drowned in pepper spray affected the perp.
A rational person would know not to wrestle with five people. The cops stopped him because he was driving erratically. I would consider this guy a criminal if he was driving under the influence. Why else would he run from the cops? If the toxicology reports show that he was on drugs, I don't have any sympathy for him. It is suspicious that his final struggle occurred in direct view of the street camera BUT street cameras could provide complete coverage in a high-crime area. Another possibility was that he wanted a big settlement from the city for his family.

Exactly and remember how no one had any sympathy for Anne Heche when she died because she might have been drinking or on drugs? She didn't hit anyone but everyone was saying she got what she deserved because she put others in harms way by driving impaired. A complete double standard when a poc does the exact same thing.

shareThere should be more bodycam footage from the second encounter since that's when things got ugly. Nichols sounded coherent during the first encounter with cops but he was out of it during the second encounter. That could have been from the taser, the hits to the head or he may have swallowed the drugs that he was possibly carrying. It would have been better to see the complete bodycam footage of the second encounter since the street cam did not provide sound. Dash cam video might show Nichols' reckless driving since they hopefully pulled him over for a reason.

I think most of these people wrestling with cops are on drugs since a sober person would realize that there is no way a person can overpower two or more cops. Chris Rock's skit below was sort of a joke when it was released but I almost think they should show this in class to students.

Did you watch the bidycam video? At the beginning shows before he ran. He's lying on the ground, with one cop holding one arm and another holding his other arm. The police are screaming at him to get on the ground she he is responding "I'm on the ground!" They keep screaming to get on the ground. One cop keeps yelling, "GIVE ME YOUR HANDS," while they are holding his arms. He keeps yelling it.
He was complying at this point and it wasn't going well.
You know that black men have been killed by police even when they comply. He knew that, too. Orlando Castille told the cop he had a legal gun and was told to get it and when he did he was shot to death.

Not once did he willingly lay flat and willingly put his arms behind his back. He struggled against it the entire time. Like most of the "I didn't do anything" crowd does.
