There was an investigation of Dumpy's campaign, not the 2016 election. That investigation began in the summer of 2016 months before the election.
They investigated his campaign because Russia hacked the DNC server with the goal of helping Dumpy win the election, Dumpy said Russia would be rewarded if Russia found Hillary's emails, Dumpy's campaign adviser Roger Stone said he had inside information what was stolen from the DNC server, and Dumpy's campaign manager Paul Manafort was caught laundering money with powerful Russian oligarchs.
With those kinds of leads, it would be a crime to not investigate.
Then Dumpy fired the guy who started the investigation, lmao.
