Trump claims ‘nobody ever heard’ Abraham Lincoln was a Republican until he pointed it out

Donald Trump has claimed that until he became US president “nobody ever heard” that Abraham Lincoln was a Republican.

The US president’s improbable claim came during a roundtable discussion on Venezuela at his Doral golf resort in Florida, in which he largely ignored the issue of the South American country and instead praised his administration’s handling of a coronavirus pandemic that has killed more than 135,000 Americans.

Trump is proving once again that he is an incompetent leader.

That's weird for him to say that considering repubs remind everyone about that fact every day.

Here's a fun fact. Lincoln wasn't even an abolitionist. He was pro emancipation, but believed black people should leave the country post emancipation. Real abolitionists like William Lloyd Garrison were the ones that wanted the constitution to apply to non whites.

I wonder how many repubs are aware of that. I know Trump isn't one of them.

reply

True. He met with several black leaders to discuss the easiest way to accomplish the deportation.
I also wonder how many people know that the Emancipation Proclamation was a political move intended to keep France and England out of the war.

reply

Trumptoads will agree with him. They will all say that they believed Abe Lincoln was a 'fascist'! LOL!

reply

Yes, but back then the Republicans were the good guys. Then they became the evil ones we know of today. That's the irony: all the Confederate statues the Reptiles today love so much are a side the Lincoln Republicans fought and died fighting.

reply

It's not so much good guys vs bad guys. It's more about the country's perception of slavery as a whole. Since the majority of the country was in favor of treating black people as property, that is what democrats sided with.

A democrat is someone who favors the popular opinion. It's the many outweighing the few.

A republican is someone who believes in large groups of people being represented by one individual. It's the few outweighing the many.

In the case of emancipation, the few were correct, the many were wrong. However, they did it for military advantage. The Brits refused to join the Confeds if it was a war about slavery. So the Union turned it into a war about slavery.

But still kudos to Lincoln for understanding slavery was immoral. He had to be talked into letting black people stay though. He wanted them kicked out of the country after emancipation.

reply

He wasn't talked into it. He died before he could implement it. Johnson's administration changed the policy.

It's also the reason why the administration decided to retaliate against the South rather than accept them back as equals as Lincoln was prepared to do. In a way you could say John Wilkes Booth actually hurt the South by killing him.

reply

Lmfao. Unlike him, we finished the 3rd grade and learned about Abe Lincoln in school. We don't need Trump to teach us about US history.

In fact, I think he himself my need to retake a few elementary study courses about US history.

reply

Political parties were completely different in the 1860s. Republicans were progressive while the Democrats were conservative. Lincoln was a RINO. Same with Trump and Trumpism. Trump has more in common with Putin and illiberal democracy than the 21st century Republican party.

reply

He should have said over and over that Venezuela is what the US will be like if the lunatic Democrats take over.

reply

👏🏻👏🏻Touché! Truth told succinctly!

reply

It wasn't about a political party, but region.

The conservative and racist southern Democrats of the 1860s did take over which is why there were lynchings, KKK, Jim Crow laws, and voting suppression. Southernors switched parties, but the racist hate is still there.

I'll also fault the progressive 1860s Republicans for abandoning black people and allowing the above actions to take place.

reply

What party is the party of Christians? It's not the Democrat Party.

Abolitionists were Christians.

The myth that the parties magically switched like Earth's magnetic poles is just a lie to cover up the Dem party switching how they exploit the brothas and sistas.

reply

You consider modern-day Republicans who torture migrant children and worship a false prophet to be Christian? I don't think so.

As for 1860s politics, you know zip and too ignorant to open a book.

I don't give a fuck about all your claims. The bottom line is that the left ----for whatever reason--- has an agenda to destroy the US as we know it and turn the country into something no one will want. So keep digging up the past to try to justify that. You're wasting your time here.

A lot of people will die if the lunatics ever take over in any way.

reply

I wish he would say this. It will just show that he has no faith in democracy and believes he should be the ultimate ruler. No one wants that -- or him, for that matter.

reply

Wow! I didn't know Lincoln was a republican.
Now please don't tell me JFK was a democrat!
We should definitely ask Trump what he thinks 😉

reply

When Obama was sworn in, his supporters tried to make the case Lincoln was really a Democrat.

reply

During slavery, the majority of Americans supported the idea of treating black people as property. The democrats simply went along with popular opinion, as that is what makes a democrat a democrat.

The popular opinion has changed, and so have democrats. Yet while most people agree slavery was wrong, a few still believe like Lincoln did that black people should be kicked out of the country. I call them republicans.

reply

Yes, today black people believe we should treat white people as property.
