The Truth About the Confederacy in the United States

Interesting ted-talk like speech. Relevant right now (posted 2017) since it's dealing with removal of confederate monuments. Trump is repeating the same mantra he did 3 years ago. Union may have won the war with the south but the south have won the peace by rewriting the history.

Who controls the past, controls the future. Who controls the present, controls the past. Control the narrative of what is true about our past, that narrative sets the mark on how we go forward into the future. If you control the truth about the past then you have the path to the future. Monuments are built to honor history. History has been stolen.

The confederate states were traitors who tried to destroy the United States. They rejected the American president Lincoln, rejected American currency, and even rejected the name, the United States of America.

They fought for slavery and white supremacy which justified it. Both are immoral. To honor the fight for slavery is immoral and unethical.

Most confederate monuments and statues were built as a reply to black struggles for equality and justice. Symbols for blacks to keep their place. The same reason for the KKK which terrorized black communities. And Jim Crow which was created to keep blacks powerless by denying voting, jobs, schools, housing, equal treatment and access, etc ..

The statues and monuments can be placed in museums if you treasure history.

Lincoln was too worried about his reelection, reunification and southern secession again. Even if the Union occupied confederate states to thwart uprising, they didn't completely dissolve, just grumbled in defeat and abided their time to rise once more. This is what happens when you don't fully wipe out/disband something you've taken/conquered over. They fester like an open wound until a day comes when they can burst open. Hell, just recently I heard Germany disbanded most of their KSK elite force because a lot of them held extremist nazi-like views.
