Plea Bargains - For or against?

I think plea bargains should be banned. The practice sometimes leads to innocent people pleading guilty as a hedge against receiving a long prison sentence if the trial doesn't go their way. No one should have to trade their constitutional right to have criminal charges against them proven beyond a reasonable doubt in exchange for a lesser sentence.

Or worse, people takes plea deals instead of going broke trying to defend themselves against a government that has no limits.

One good aspect of having the death penalty is convicted criminals will take a plea deal to receive life in prison rather than risk getting the death penalty. This can save a lot of money in legal costs to the tax payer.
