Asian-Americans and the "Model Minority"

What's your opinion of Asian-Americans being regarded as the "model minority"?

I read in some articles today that the "model minority" thing is used as a tool to advance racist white peoples' interests. It harms both Asians and non-Asian minorities. It harms groups like African Americans by promoting the narrative that Asians can get by without government assistance yet black people can't. It also harms Asians by setting stereotypes and high expectations for them, as well as splitting them from other minority groups who would otherwise be allies against discrimination.

Asian-Americans have always been known as 'The Quiet Minority', as a friend of mine (who's from Hong Kong) has said repeatedly. But to say that Asians can get by without government assistance is quite a stretch - just like saying Black people can't.

Depending on what Asians you are talking about - there are indeed those from different Asian countries which do depend on government assistance in our country, depending on where they have come from.

I totally agree. Asians are different, we're not a homogeneous group.

reply

No racial or ethnic group is homogeneous. Many people can't understand that, though.

reply

That's right. Asians commit crimes and drop out of school too.

reply

Technically, the global minority on earth is White Europeans.
