Finally watched this and found it to be pretty good.
Has it always been shown with different Colour tints for each room/part of the Opera House? I found it a little distracting at first that it was Black & White one moment, then the action moved to another room and it turned Pink/Purple.
I thought the set design was fantastic and also the performance from Chaney was pretty good despite the make-up on his face.
Any other fans of this silent Classic?
One of Chaney's best. How about that unmasking scene? It must have been pretty shocking to audiences of the day seeing it for the first time. There is a definitive version with color sequences (the masked ball, the phantom eavesdropping on the lovers on the opera house roof) fully restored, available on DVD. And how about that ending?
In 1929 the film was re-released with a sound track. This version is also available on the aforementioned DVD.
I must have seen the definitive version (I recorded a TV showing) then as the ball was in Technicolor, albeit just Green & Red added to the Black & White.
Indeed the unmasking must have been a sight on the big screen back in the day.
It was one of the first silents I've seen, and instantly loved it. I can't still, though, make a difference between both versions, but I've read that the one from 1929 is the better preserved.
