Since IMDb is shutting down the message boards...

what's the best site for free and open discussion of Lord of the Rings and Tolkien-related topics?

reply

I was about to ask the same.

I will miss these boards; such good memories. (And a much better platform than social media for film discussion and engagement, IMO).

(Edit: It seems The One Ring has message boards. They're not quite like these, for sure, but something is better than nothing).

Good luck to all the Ringnuts!

As for me, I've been on the IMDb boards since 1999 and writing about LOTR when "Fellowship of the Ring" came out.
I'll have to figure out how to get and keep longterm internet movie discussions going but it won't be easy.
I have no idea how to archive the old threads on the JRR Tolkien Board and make them readily available.

IMDb boards were some of the best designed I've seen on the web. (In some ways the best.)
And Facebook definitely will not be a good replacement.
YouTube is poorly designed in terms of keeping track of comments.

I don't have the answer.
All I'm left with is that this was my #1 internet community that I was a part of.
And that is due all the fine people who participated in it.
A special thanks to athene who was a guide in keeping the Ringnut community going in the early days.

All the best, BB ;-)

it is just in my opinion - imo - 🌈

Hey BB,

You can copy and paste those threads; just store them in a Word document or e-mail them to yourself, while you/we figure out where else to post (I've done that with a thread or two in the past). When I've done it the entire font, format, nest, etc. is as it looks like here.

All the best!

Where to go for movie discussions?
- There are sites for very popular franchises; for Tolkien discussions, Star Wars and the Alien franchise for instance.
I've checked these out and a person might find a thread that has some recent traffic. But mostly message boards have very small groups on these sites and threads can be abandoned.
But of course if a person wants, they can try to post about a Tolkien movie and then a Star Wars movie or Star Trek, hopping around to individual sites for each movie.

- A general discussion site like Reddit.
The Reddit movie discussions I've seen are not long term like with IMDb. People on Reddit write about a film when it first comes out (maybe start something later) and then after a few weeks the thread is usually done and gets archived (no new posts).

- IMDb alternatives are not really message board alternatives;
https://techboomers.com/t/sites-like-imdb
These have listings of movies, ratings, professional critic reviews and maybe allow for members to post reviews.
There is no message board system or individual personal message system that I can see with these other movie sites.
- But with Rotten Tomatoes or Letterboxd people can write reviews and there is a bit of communication from that but not much dialogue.

Imo at least, BB ;-)
