Star Wars: The Force Awakens or Rogue One?

What say you, my fellow film fans? And may the force be with you.

52 yr old SW geek here.....I saw without hesitation Rogue One by far. Absolutely loved the worlds, characters, raw courage, backstory of an Imperial Officer (the first ever in SW) and of course the battle scenes. When I heard they were continuing the SW saga, before The Force Awakens, I was looking forward to new characters, new worlds, new challenges, etc......TFA , although an enjoyable movie, felt too familiar for me. In my opinion Gareth Edwards took risks in Rogue One that paid off tremendously. Loved the insight into the Rebellion and also the Empire. Also loved the "gritty" serious tone, and also, being a huge fan of war movies , I loved that this was the first "war movie" in the SW saga - reminded us it is Star WARS. No touchy feely stuff here, no Ewoks or Jar Jar, just the coming together of a team of rebels who made the ultimate sacrifice. The final scene in Rogue One, from the time that Vader says "prepare a boarding party" , through the end of the movie, is in my opinion one of the top 3 scenes in all the SW movies. I will never be able to read the 2nd paragraph of the opening crawl in A New Hope without tearing up....R1 showed the tremendous sacrifice to get those plans.

A very intelligent response Officer, and I tend to agree with you. Btw I assume you're air force? I'm army.

Thank you and yes....retired in 2012 after 26 year US Air Force career. Aircraft Maintenance and Logistics Officer. 5 years in Japan.....2 tours to the Desert

reply

Wow! 26 years, Japan and the Desert! I plan to visit China and Japan probably in 2018. I've never been to the Desert, but I'm planning a trip this year to Kenya and Tanzania to see the animals of the Serengeti.

Thank you for your service. 66 year old here. I was in the Ohio Army National Guard from 1972 to 1978 in the Communications Section of an Engineers Battalion. And I couldn't maintain or fix an engine to save my life. :-)

MovieMan I also am a proud graduate of the US Army War College in Carlisle PA, class of 2007. They let about 20 Air Force officers in each year and I was lucky enough to be selected. I am very proud of Soldiers - my Dad was in 10th Mountain Div right after the Korean War (ski trooper, trained at Camp Hale CO). His dad was in the 104th Eng Battalion, 29th ID, in 1918 in WWI - center sector in France. Was in the push against the Germans and was gassed 3 times (he survived).

My Dad never forgets to remind me that the Air Force was once the Army Air Corps!! LOL!!

Thank YOU for your service, Soldier! HOO AHH!!

Thanks. I graduated from the University of Cincinnati in 1972.

My late father was in The First Special Service Force in WW II, and was wounded by shrapnel at Anzio, Italy. He was of course awarded the Purple Heart. They made a movie about the unit called "The Devil's Brigade". That nickname (Die Teufelsbrigade) was the nickname the Germans gave them.

Hoo Ahh!

reply

Wow, Anzio! My Dad and I were just talking about Anzio the other day. Could have been much worse for the Americans, very close to disaster.....a lot of courageous soldiers there.

Hey I think I will be enjoying the SW board here....are you a big fan? I try to explain the impact of the original in May 1977 to my 3 boys (they are 14, 13 and 9 and HUGE SW fans) - they don't understand just how huge that movie was...!!!

reply

Cue the Twilight Zone music. :-) Yes it was close to a disaster, but they persevered.
In 2011 I visited the Italian Battlefields where the FSSF fought, with 74 others in the
First Special Service Force Association. It was truly amazing.

I'm enjoying all of the boards here on MovieChat. Their biggest advantage is the email notification. That is SO cool because it makes having a conversation like ours much easier.

As to SW I'm a fan, but I'm old skol. I think the franchise started to go downhill in the second half of Jedi. Storm Troopers being defeated by teddy bears with sticks and stones? Please.

The Sequels and Force Awakens were meh. I think Rogue One was a bit better. I will of course go to see The Last Jedi when it premiers.

It's a close one, and both had their pros and cons, but I'm gonna have to say The Force Awakens. I just like the characters better, even if large parts of the plot were borrowed from previous movies. Rogue One seemed somewhat rushed, and I didn't really like the idea to begin with. A whole movie just to cover up the plot hole of having a flaw in the Death Star? Then no mention of the characters later in the films? Really?

reply

"Rogue One." I watched that movie 3x.

reply

Three times. Wow. You obviously really loved it.

reply

I did! The story was really, really good.
