barring complete disaster this should finally be northwestern's year

to make an ncaa tournament. they're currently 16-4 overall, tied for 3rd in the big ten at 5-2. they have no bad losses this season (4 losses are to butler, notre dame, Michigan st., and Minnesota). they have several wins over quality opponents (texas, wake forest, Dayton, iowa, and osu).

they should hit the 20 win threshold fairly easily. they have 11 games left.

winnable games on their schedule include

Nebraska
Illinois
Rutgers
Illinois

quality opponents remaining, and a chance to steal another big notch in their belt include:

Indiana
purdue
wiconsin
Maryland
indiana
Michigan
purdue

I think 4 more wins should seal the deal. that puts them at 20-11 on the season, 9-7 in conference. provided, I think, that 1 of those 4 wins comes off the quality opponents list.

add that, I think the committee would love the opportunity to finally give them a nod.

anyways, this might sounds crazy, but having seen this northwestern team play in person when they came here to lincoln, and having a ton of respect for their coach... I really don't see them stumbling to the finish line.

I think they're gonna cleanup on that cream puff list and probably steal at least 2 from the quality opponent list, probably have a solid seed in the big ten tourney, and maybe snag a 1st round win there too.

they look like about a 7/10 seed for the ncaa tourney from what I've seen.

pretty fun stuff! only power 5 conference team to have never played in an ncaa tournament.

I really like coach chris Collins. he has brought a lot of firsts to that program.

first 20 win season
looking at first back to back winning seasons
a slew of "first wins" against opponent x in the big ten in decades (the recent osu win for example)

he should get the honor of being the first to lead them to a tourney appearance.

solid year. it's a down season in the big 10, tho. but that said, it was the right time to take the n'western job. crean, matta, i don't see being at their schools within 2 years.

yep. coach Collins is in for a big fat pay day somewhere soon.

you think he stays big ten though and doesn't wait for a high profile acc job to open up?

I kinda have to speculate that with all the back issues for coach k, you kind of wonder if he may not be thinking about retiring soon... and Collins would be the perfect fit for that job.

Indiana or osu would be a nice consolation prize though. I don't think matta is in hot water though.

i'd stay in the big 10. why not create your own legacy? there's no one to compete with at n'western. the league is wide open for a new coach to stake his own claim.

you never want to be the coach who replaces a legend. that's a doomed career move.

and really, this is collins' 1st chance at winning conf. record. it's not like he's even shown he's that good a coach.

I disagree. northwestern literally had their first 20 win season in history last season under Collins. you might not follow the big ten closely, but I've grown up watching it and northwestern's historical ineptitude is the stuff of legends. there is really no comparison elsewhere in major college basketball. coming in there and winning 15, 20, and now 16 games (with 11 left to go) is really unheard of at that school with the talent they have.

being at a school with such a poor history is good for him. if he had 3 sub. 500 seasons at duke....he wouldn't get thru year 2.

as a coach you have to be able to recruit & coach talent, showing that he can do this at n'western makes him an average coach. let's see how they fare at purdue....

well that's an unfair benchmark (the purdue game). purdue is an elite/final four contender. northwestern is merely a 7-10 seed. could easily see them stealing one from Indiana or Michigan though.

unfair? 

sports are inherently 'unfair'. you have a winner. and a loser. either you are getting better, or you are getting worse. there is no stasis of equality.

it's sweet to judge the success of the program on winning at ohio state where they hadn't won since the early 70's. alas, this years ohio state team kinda sucks. big time. it's really not an achivment of note. a win at purdue? then we'll talk about what a magical boy genius coach collins is.

I jhave to agree in less they have have a big I take it back a huge collapse, and plus they won at a college yesterday that a Northwestern team haven't won at since 1977. And in that year at the time then rock and roll singer Elvis Presley would only at unknown at the time, would only have months left to live.
