Musical Acts/musicians that were hyped as being huge but never really took off?

I remember when The Clarks were signed to a major label in the late 90s. They were suppose to make it big but music was shifting and the major that signed them mostly underrepresented them and eventually dropped a bunch of lesser known bands on their label, The Clarks among them.

With the dynamic of how music is promoted I doubt there are many bands like that today, except in their own minds.
