Double albums that needed to be double albums?

A common complaint is that _______________ would have been better if it had been narrowed down to one disc. What are some cases where you think a single disc wouldn't be as effective, as even the lesser tracks seem to exist for a good reason. The first one to come to my mind is The Wall.

The White Album - Beatles

I've tried to break it down to a single album and cant make it fit. With only a few exceptions, I dont see that album as having a lot of filler

Just Lennon's White Album material put together in a solo album would be the best work of his career.

I've always thought the White Album was his most inspired work with the Beatles

The Wall is the definition of overstuffed.

I'd go with Quadrophenia.

I don't understand the complaint; it seems as absurd as saying that a 50 minute album would be better if narrowed down to 40 mins. Why does it matter if an album is on 2 discs?

You'd think fans would be pleased to have more music from the bands they like...or perhaps it's just an admittance that even the best albums have boring filler songs on them (Within You Without You on Sgt. Pepper for example).

The complaint is that a lot of very long albums are so long because they're full of filler. It's not really a tough code to crack.

Sure, but every album, single or double, has fillers. Some have so many fillers they'd have been better off as singles.

Weird topic; is it such a chore to put on another cd & skip tracks like you did on the first cd?

Sure, but every album, single or double, has fillers.I strongly disagree.
Weird topic; is it such a chore to put on another cd & skip tracks like you did on the first cd?No, but why is it weird to think an album could stand to have less crap to sift through in the first place? And while it's less of an issue in the digital age, there's also the fact that a double album usually costs more than single album, and who wants to pay extra for content that's not up to snuff?

At any rate, this thread is meant for talking about double albums that filled their space effectively with minimal filler.
