Neil Diamond and Neil Sedaka are deservedly in the Songwriters Hall Of Fame. Both men received the Sammy Cahn Lifetime Achievement Award. Both Diamond and Sedaka were instrumental in helping to develop the famous "Brill Building sound".

Neil Diamond and Neil Young are in the Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame. I believe Sedaka should be in there, a brilliant pianist who trained at Juilliard after being acknowledged by Arthur Rubinstein for the raw talent he brought to pop & rock. Neil Diamond applied his fencing skills to his demon guitar-slinging.

"That’s not to say that pop music is ‘over’, as one or two of my friends have been heard to say. They have their Neil Young records and feel that nothing more is necessary. It’s just that pop’s present is unusually burdened by the excellence of its past. Music fashioned long ago for instant gratification has proved to possess extraordinary staying power. Over the years I have met one or two pop performers socially and if I have been drunk enough, I have asked them how it feels to have songs they wrote (in some cases, dashed off) in their youth still being played and loved decades later. And they can’t quite get over it either. How did that happen? I bet even Paul McCartney asks himself that question from time to time."

- Marcus Berkmann, The Spectator

"While I was in England last week, Paul McCartney sidled up to me. He was a little surprised I had picked 'Blackbird' and 'Yesterday,' but he liked it, and that made me very happy."

- Neil Diamond

I like them all. Not every song, but I feel all three men contributed greatly to popular music of the 20th century. Neil Young takes top spot for me though, because of his involvement with Buffalo Springfield and the strength of his classic albums. But all three men have written and recorded plenty of songs I enjoy.

Diamond by a mile. Sedaka had some nice material. Young sucked.

You may be right, I might be crazy, but it just may be a lunatic you are looking for!

reply

I think Sedaka is easily the weakest link out of those three.
