My name is Jisu and I am a grad school student. I am currently doing a research project on finding out why people like certain animation characters and not others. What makes an animation character interesting or likeable?

I think people would like an animated character for (mostly) the same reasons that they like a non-animated character.
Some common reasons for liking a character:
Funny
Smart, clever
Cool, stylish
Powerful, tough, good fighter
Friendly, caring
Strong-willed, independent
A character that people can relate to
And one more reason, specific to animation:
Good character design
I love Bugs Bunny because he's so snarky in a loveable way. I never cared for Mickey Mouse because he's such a boring goody two shoes.
Avenged Sevenfold watches My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic
I particularly like evil characters in gothic settings in the Disney classics. I think it is difficult for actors to generate the same kind of creepy malice in live action versions of the stories.
