Why have all the movies been cut down to a single page of topics? [never mind]

Just throwing away all the interesting old posts? Gone forever?

reply

Cost cutting. The less pages a website has, the less it cost to run. $$$$$$$$

reply

Server space is incredibly inexpensive. I can't believe this was the best solution. Was this announced anywhere?

I've been with this site from the beginning, but this is really making me wonder whether to continue.

reply

No, no announcement that I've seen. But it is what it is. And it sucks. A lot of my old posts and comments from IMDb that were here when we first started up here are now gone. Entire boards have been wiped clean. It's bad enough that there hasn't been any upgrades to this site in years, but to now delete entire boards to save money?? It's like, why did he even bother to begin with?? Might as well just shut it down.

reply

Indeed, and raises the question of why we should trust someone willing to so casually delete our content.

reply

"All?" I checked two older less popular titles at random and both had more than three pages. Can you be more specific?

Want to compare to F|B which is the only other active board with archived IMDb posts I'm aware of.

reply

Which titles? I look at many and not one has more than a page of topics. There may be multiple pages *within* a topic, but that's not the same. A LOT has been destroyed.

What is F|B?

reply

https://moviechat.org/tt0088170/Star-Trek-III-The-Search-for-Spock and https://moviechat.org/tt0233142/3000-Miles-to-Graceland

filmboards.com . It's a bit less active than even here, but it lets you link your old IMDb post history to your new account and has a more faithful, if clunky, design.

[edit] Quid pro quo, doctor... :)

reply

NO...FUCK FILMBOARDS.🙂

reply

I certainly use it less than here, but can't deny the neat-o factor of looking at fifteen-plus years of post history, and in-line pics and videos... Oh, and being able to exclude politics [and soapbox, ironically] from recent posts is a massively huge bonus. I'm not really invested enough in either, so I see there is some good-natured rivalry at play, which is great. Just grateful there are alternatives, and for the nth time, fuck IMDb... :)

reply

it really does suck.

reply

There's only one page of topics for each of them.

For example, on Star Trek III:

First topic is "Not a failure and not mediocre; here's why".
Last topic is "Who saw this in cinemas back in 84?.

But until recently, there were pages and pages of topics.
What might you be referring to?

Appreciate the link! Will czech it out.

reply

There's 8 pages on ST3.

reply

Thank you for preserving that one scrap of sanity. Much obliged.

reply

WTH? I'm still currently seeing 3+ pages of replies. Page number links at the bottom only. Still waiting on links or even titles from you to check.

Your first subject is the second one I'm seeing. First one was from two hours ago. Your last subject is indeed the last subject on *page one* of posts. One of at least three...

I thought I may have missed a setting for number of posts displayed per page, but looks like we're both seeing twenty... Weird...

And update me on your Prague-ress...

reply

Ohhh... they hid all the other pages way down there under ads.

reply

Use an ad blocker. I see no ads ever.

reply

Some of us want the site to continue so we turn the blockers off here.

reply

I'll never give another penny to this site.

reply

Could you show us on this doll where the site hurt you? ;)

reply

Glad to see closure being gotten. Now to open a new exciting chapter in your life, as April said, ad blockers! Big fan of the Brave browser with built-in blocking and plenty of other goodies, or many browsers can use add-ons/plugins like uBlock Origin, or you can get hardcore and install a custom firmware on your router and change your whole household's connected life.

reply

BUT... whole entire boards have been wiped over time. Boards that used to have tons of posts but didn't get much play on here have gotten wiped clean.

reply

Case in point. I couldn't recall off the top of my head any specific boards, I have to wait for them to pop up before I can give you an example. And lo and behold, here you go:

MC:

https://moviechat.org/nm0005290/Master-P

FB:

https://filmboards.com/board/20005290/

reply

Now *that* is what I call closure, thanks! Good looking out. Shame to see, however.

I made the same remark on the IMDb boards before they closed them: if each character/letter on a message board site is one byte, even padded for overhead, how costly could the storage/bandwidth be? Never bothered to attempt the math, and not asking anyone else to. More of a rhetorical question...

reply

I think the real reason over at IMDB was that they didn't want to worry about all the moderation and potential lawsuits, especially not a company like Amazon.

reply

Ha, what moderation? And has any forum been subject to an attempted lawsuit, let alone a successful one from users' posts?

reply

Are you claiming there was no moderation or that it was ineffective? There were certainly deleted posts and threads. Even a post of mine disappeared once.

I don't know, but would you want to be the owner of the site that was first?

reply

Though I was a long time IMDb forum user, I basically stuck to the individual boards of older, less popular films and the horror board, and rarely if never took part in any trolling, controversial or popular threads/forums, so the only "moderation" I witnessed was the clumsy, seemingly random purging of pages or older posts getting pruned like branches.

Would I? No. I would think if such a thing was possible, it would have happened long ago. Disclaimers had been a thing on movies and TV shows before message boards were a thing, so...

I was asking for examples, not hypotheticals, anyway. :)

reply

More and more sites are being deemed responsible for their content. Zuckerberg et al. have been called in to testify to Congress more than once. It's not that difficult to read the tea leaves.

reply

I'll bet it's mostly to do with boards about persons rather than shows. They have to be careful about slander/defamation. Fortunately I mostly care about boards that discuss programs and only minimally those about personalities, which tends mostly to be gossip anyway.

reply

I've seen it happen on all kinds of boards. Movies included.

reply

Thanks a lot for this! I was able to see a lot of posts I made years ago and can no longer find on this site.

reply

My pleasure. Only recently got turned on to it myself. That place has some super neat features, of which that's my favorite. And the layout and the number of trolls really gives me that IMDb nostalgia. :)

reply

LOL! Are you in their number?

reply

The number of F|B users? Yep. Name name as here. Trolls? As stated above: https://moviechat.org/bd0000043/The-Sandbox/62c3e139d1a4d7583d77c7a5/Why-have-all-the-movies-been-cut-down-to-a-single-page-of-topics-never-mind?reply=62d9e0e0d48a3c2da18e9da1 . Not saying I've never done it, but it's usually pretty harmless and obvious, especially to anyone who spent any time on imageboards back in the day. I come to movie forums to talk about movies, and find most IMDb style trolls tedious. There are a handful who put some effort in and can be entertaining, ngl, but they are a definite exception.

reply

LOL, that's a yes! ;) (and sounds like an INTP)

reply

Great guess if the latter is referring to a M-B score, as that was my first score 10+ years ago. What gave me away? Was it all the attempts for specificity? The funny thing is the T was my most centerline attribute and a couple years ago, I tipped over to an F, but again, not by far.

reply

Combination of being open to trolling -- INTPs are the most frequent trollers on the web -- and the Libertarian approach to forum moderation.

I know an INTP guy, by the way, who after being banned from a site created his own forum site where the rule was no moderation at all except for porn. Lasted a couple years before it all collapsed in ruins.

Just as a point of information and not trying to start an argument, actually we have our type for life, but as we grow older we develop more the letters that we do not have. Moreover, the "test" (really a diagnostic) does not *determine* anything. It's just meant as a signpost to help one figure out the correct type. After taking it, one is to read the description of the suggested type and those close to it and from those decide which type is most accurate. So prosaic, huh?

reply

Funny, as I was reading about that stuff for the first time in ages, it kind of felt like astrology. Fun to think about, but wouldn't make any major decisions based on it. Would love read more about M-B types, libertarianism and trolling if you have a link or two.

Detected nothing antagonistic in what you said, no worries. And even if so, I got a long fuse and try to save my powder for more important matters like horror movies, etc.

reply

It's proper use is mainly in enhancing communication and understanding. I also dislike using it for things like matching or career planning.

Wish I had a great link for you. The observation of the linkage is my own, derived from experience more than anything. But there's a large community on youtube studying and talking about this stuff though. Some you might like are entitled

- 8 INTP Males with Eric Wen, Eric The INTP, Joshua L, Andrew, Tim, Noah, Justin and Angel

- 6 Male INTPs w/ Spacey (Stephen), Tim, Joel, Dave, Anthony and Warmest Robot | Type Talks E41

- The INTP Personality Type "The Rational Theorist" with INTP Spacey | Type Talks E32

- INTP Myths with INTP Tim and Joel | Type Talks E21

Or just search for "INTP" "Joyce Meng".

Ugh, cannot stand horror movies. Just finished Byzantium, which seems to be one of the better ones, but still, not my cup of tea.

reply

Can agree on your first. I have my INFP badge in my profile in some communities I'm most active in for just such a purpose. Cheers for the clues.

And I'll be the first to admit most genre movies are crap, which is what makes the good ones so special. The best are just solid stories that just happen to have genre elements in them, akin to Byzantium. Other greats in the same vein you might enjoy:

Let the Right One In (2008) - the US remake wasn't too bad either
Annihilation (I) (2018)
The Host (2006)

reply

Many thanks! but I've decided the whole genre is just not for me. There are so many movies and so little time. I'll just look elsewhere.

It's nice that M-B ideas are become more and more mainstream. The other night I was crossing the street and overheard a couple talking about how one of them was an ENTJ.

reply

I feel that earlier I didn't give a good enough reply and want to remedy that.

Behind a type like INTP is a more thorough definition, in fact a stack of cognitive functions that the person uses to navigate the world. For INTP that would be

1. Ti - introverted thinking - internal building of logical systems
2. Ne - extroverted intuition - creating ideas, imagination
3. Si - introverted sensing - dwelling on past pleasures, avoiding past pains
4. Fe - extroverted feeling - reading others' emotions and communicating your own
5. Te - extroverted thinking - efficient planning organization of tasks
6. Ni - introverted intuition - discerning, divining the future
7. Se - extroverted sensing - dealing with the physical world, the senses
8. Fi - introverted feeling - empathy and authenticity

About the status of these functions:
1. the one they grew up doing, that they do effortlessly, all the time, like breathing
2. the one that they learned how to do in their teens, and are good at
3. the one that they're not very good at, but by their late 20s start developing
4. the one that they aspire to and start developing in the 30s, but before that are not particularly good at
5. the opposite attitude to (1); their ability in it is strong, but they prefer not to use it
6. the opposite attitude to (2), also strong and not preferred
7. the blind spot that they are not good with at all and don't even see the point of
8. the trickster that only works for them about half the time

Now the stack for INFP would be significantly different
Fi
Ne
Si
Te
Fe
Ni
Se
Ti

So, to me, when an INTP says they have changed from T to F, what that means to me instead is that they are developing or have developed their 4th function. Congrats on doing that, by the way!

reply

That is simultaneously fascinating and confusing, thank you and d'wat. So if I grasp a small piece, the thing that changed/"improved" in my transition from a T to an F is my TE (the fourth item in the last list)? That completely makes sense as my work increasingly requires a large amount of relationship management/face time which is usually at least pleasant, but quite draining.

If it was FE, I'd hope most people as they emotionally mature improve there, but IMO I've always been an empath. Like George Costanza, I've always been able to "sense the slightest human suffering." :D And usually end up being everyone's confidant.

Cheers for the wisdom!

reply

Well, in my conception of you as an INTP, you would have developed Fe. This is also the function that would correspond to communicating well with others.

Most everyone gets better with everything over time, but Fe is difficult for INTJs and ISTJs because they have it in their 7th slot. Maybe they don't want to donate to The Human Fund. ;)

Introverts in general often end up being confidants because folks sense they don't go around talking that much. :)

Anyway, I know that INTPs, because of their Ti, like learning and studying systems, so that is why I thought my words might not be wasted on you. :)

reply

I have a Human Fund t-shirt. :D

Love learning all kinds of things. Also love chatting, depending on the chattee, but value people's privacy and confidence, not to mention their time, and this convo feels a bit one-sided, so appreciate your taking yours. What movie genres/themes do you enjoy? Happy to throw some recs. at you.

And noticed SE is in my seventh slot no matter how you slice it, but must not grasp the concept as I've always enjoyed all five senses, am kinesthetic and situationally aware i.e. value safety not just mine, but others.

reply

LOL

Hrm, very thoughtful. Know anything about anime? Are there any examples that people who don't really care for anime nevertheless like? Beyond the Ghibli stuff?

Hmm, being kinesthetic might be Si...

One INTP guy I know can drive, but doesn't like to do it because he thinks he'll get into an accident. Walks everywhere, even to the grocery store.

Another one drives regularly, but tends to be clumsy.

Both of them don't pick up after themselves and you find their discarded clothes strewn about the floor.

Any bells ringing?

Could you be mistyped? An ISTP, for example, would swap Ne-Si for Se-Ni in the stack.

reply

Love to drive, like a lot. Didn't learn how until early 20s being a city kid, so that may have something to do with it. Like to think I'm a cautious and courteous driver, happy at ten mph over limit, slow to some, too fast for others...

Total slob. Nailed that one. Clean up well, when necessary.

Anything's possible, but my N and P scores are highest, both around 70%.

Might be your anime guy. Though I personally find a lot of it overly explanatory, I have seen a few. That said, FLCL (2000) is one of my favorite things ever. Very kitchen sink approach, nuanced characters and still has epic giant robot battles. At six 25 min. episodes, it's not a big time investment and I can't gush about it enough. Another plus is the English dub was personally overseen by the creators, so doesn't suck, unlike 98% of dubs. Other things I've liked as a non-anime fan:

Dead Leaves (2004) - violent insanity from some FLCL guys
Sword of the Stranger (2007) - good old samurai adventure
Mind Game (2004)
and one series I'm six [eps.] in and it's still holding my interest:
Saga of Tanya the Evil (2017)

reply

Oh thanks! But what is an FLCL?

reply

LOL it's not M-B-related. :D It's the Anglicized title of a six-episode anime mini-series, フリクリ aka Furi kuri. There were two sequels made in 2018 that I can't vouch for yet, fyi.
