Why are women's underwear called panties...
and men's underwear are not? Men and women both wear pants and underwear is worn under pants. Why the difference in names?

There was a similar thread here a while back and I forget what the answer was... I think it went to pantaloons, something about pant legs being sewn or laced to the "panties" that were belted around the waist... and that garment remained being called "panties" for women, but not for men...
The real $64,000 question is, why is it called a "cod piece" and not a "trout piece"?
