ANNOUNCEMENT: Thanks (& Boards Closure FAQ continuation thread)

The previous announcement thread at http://www.imdb.com/board/bd0000042/flat/265706940 has reached the 600 post limit so this is a continuation thread with a little extra information.

Again thanks for all the feedback here and on https://getsatisfaction.com/imdb/topics/imdb-message-boards. We have gathered our responses in an FAQ at http://www.imdb.com/help/show_leaf?boardsclosurefaq.

We hope to see all of the Contributors Help regulars over at the Data Issues & Policy Discussions community on Get Satisfaction at https://getsatisfaction.com/imdb/categories/imdb_imdb_contentdata_issues.

This will be the last day on which the data team will be checking this board, so any contribution issues posted from now onwards may not receive an answer from the team before the boards shutdown, sorry. It is therefore now best to post upon Get Satisfaction instead. Over the last few weeks we have tried to answer all open threads or to redirect them appropriately (some of you will eventually receive follow-ups via the help desk as open tickets are fixed).

I will add some links into the previous thread in a separate reply as we have tried to clarify some of the misunderstandings around the boards closure and to add further details where possible. After the boards closure, the IMDb Community Team will be working on the next round of community features for IMDb. Stay tuned.

So then ... thank you to everyone who has posted (or even just read) messages on CH over the years. We have certainly seen some changes from 2+ years of backlogs in the early 2000s to almost everything being processed within 24 hours, 7 days per week now (special thanks to our weekend team). Please do not look upon this as an end, but instead a new beginning over at https://getsatisfaction.com/imdb/categories/imdb_imdb_contentdata_issues.

Col (and on behalf of the database content team)

https://getsatisfaction.com/imdb/topics/solution-for-message-board
I got some ideas that keep message board alive if Imdb really want that

1- Get paid for MessageBoard
(At a low price members can use messageboard, free users only can see but can't write anything or just imdbpro users can write, free users only see what written)
Additives---- I don't think trolls give money for trolling

2- Close Personal Message board page
(I think so many bad, abusive, negative message written to personal page like actor, actress, director etc. and they are offended so close personal message boards. We dont nedd to discuss actor, actress we want discuss MOVİES)
Additives---Movie star and directors will not be bothered and They can not sue

3-Close the Politics section or You can close all General Boards section
(So many fight, conflict or racist thing written there. Well we dont need to discuss politics imdb is about movies and series keep away your fight from imdb
Additives--- We get rid of unnecessary talk

4-Close the Message boards of new Movies and Series
(There are too many spoilers, negatives reviews and fanboys (marvel,dc) shows up when new movie came out. Producers doesn't like negatives reviews so close the new movies page and just open 1 year later or whatever leave the movie theaters
I guess no trolls comes after a year and it's not important for producers because movies are leave Movie theater)
Additives---- Producers and Fanboys not will be problem

Message board only thing i came for imdb and for so many users, this the place we could discuss ideas, share our opinions, we found the answers,we learned what other people think and getting friendship

Facebook, twitter or other forums will not be same like message board, you know that
How can i find a person that to watch asian, polish, french or whatever country movies from 1965, 1988,1999? there are so many people did not watch movies so impossible to find them other platforms...

And worst thing is that all the information, knowledge will be gone !!!!!!!
Its be like Library of Alexandria fire for movies and movie lovers
You cant understand benefits to see message from 2002 or 2005 and That user can come back after so many years and write something.

Message board iconic and unique place for us and You will kill him.
Please reply this post for authorized person can see hope for Col Needham
(I apologize for the bad grammar, English is not my native language)

I got some ideas that keep message board alive if Imdb really want that There is no chance of "keeping" the boards. There never was. We should consider what would be an improvement over the doomed existing system in the event of a new board system being instated in the future. I've gotten the impression that the present boards software doesn't adequately satisfy the board administrators' needs much less the regular users' wants. I've proposed some software ideas that would perhaps enhance situational awareness from a managerial perspective.

The user interface shouldn't be a problem so the "look" of the boards wouldn't be such a problem as it's your basic html and php. It's whatever mobile phone appearance they're wanting. I can't stand the look of websites that don't even look or function like a website. I like this font. The space to write about movies in. I don't like wobbly scrolling.

The boards should be kept and when something comes along that can restore them without the failures, they would be there. A hiatus should be the resolution for now. But they want to just nuke it. I wonder how many other pages will go down in the process? Nukes don't tend to be isolated after all.

Read https://www.beatworm.co.uk/blog/internet/imdb-boards-no-more - the message boards software does not use PHP.

I don't know all the coding languages used, I took a stab at it. But message boards goes all the way back to Usenet and it's always been a platform where message boards sprang from. If it's a question of SQL, there are a multitude of ways the format could be made to function and I only lurk on that other computing site. I couldn't possibly sort through it as my knowledge into coding only goes so far. I just know the basic html and some css.

The problem with using common gateway interface (CGI) is that it's limited by the number of processes, each consuming a certain amount of RAM, that can exist at one time on a computer.

I don't know if you recall or not but I was mentioning to you on the INTK board about the technology being currently dubbed as "dimension compression" which is a program that files huge amounts of data in a single file, coding, function and all. What the goal is, is to make RAM no longer an issue and to enable your basic home computer into something that before would have taken a dozen servers to handle. But this is still being developed. That's why I say, save everything and just put things on hold and wait for this new technology and then bring back the boards, get volunteer moderators and hire some new blood...but they won't. I have a pair of those welder's goggles...do you? Might want to get some of those.
