When I saw the trailer for Arrival with the Eggshaped Vessel hovering above the Ground it reminded me of this 90s movie (probably direct to video) where there's also a similarly shaped UFO landing in the desert.
As far as I remember you don't get to see any aliens in this one. The title was consisting only of one word, describing a kind of stone or something. My guess was "monolith" but that was wrong.
Any clues?
Starman, perhaps? But that was an eighties feature film. There was a short-lived television attempt with Robert Hays, but still in the eighties.
