10 Broadway Songs You Won't Believe Were Cut From Movies

Off the top of my head, two musicals I can think of that went from Broadway to Hollywood with their scores virtually intact were GYPSY and MY FAIR LADY. Even Rodgers & Hammerstein's OKLAHOMA! and CAROUSEL lost a song or two along the way, though SOUTH PACIFIC survived intact, and even had a new song added ("My Girl Back Home," which was cut from the show early on, I believe).

All traces of Karl Malden singing were cut from Gypsy (1962). That would constitute parts of at least two numbers and the complete excision of the upbeat “Wherever We Go.”

About #5, “An English Teacher” from Bye Bye Birdie (1963), the song had no place in the film because the Dick Van Dyke character was changed from an English major to a scientist. THAT is the change from stage to screen that bears discussion.

Not on the list is a lot of people’s #1 fury about a song being dropped from a film. It is mine. That would be “The Seven Deadly Virtues” from Camelot (1967). When the movie came out, one outraged movie patron in my city actually wrote a letter to the editor about the loss of the song. That’ll show ‘em.

My #2 choice would be the disservice done to the music of the comic villains, Monsieur and Madame Thénardier in Les Misérables (2012) . An entire song of Monsieur T. – perhaps the bleakest number in the entire work , “Dogs Eat The Dogs” (also known as “The Sewer Song”) - is totally gone except for one line which is spoken (“Here’s a tasty ring”). The couple’s final number, “Beggar At The Feast,” is half-missing, the first half which includes the title line.

I love that song. I did not know it was not in the movie version.

I thought "You've Got to be Carefully Taught" was cut, no?

"Something Was Missing" is missing from John Huston'e Annie. It's one of my favorite songs from the stage musical.

"Scram, Sherlock. I'm working this side of the street."

Five songs were cut from the movie of Guys & Dolls: "A Bushel and a Peck", "My Time of Day", "I've Never Been In Love Before", "More I Cannot Wish You" and "Marry the Man Today".

"More I Cannot Wish You" is my favorite song from the show.
I thought "My Time of Day" and "I've Never Been In Love Before" gave nice insight to the characters. The other two are pretty much filler anyway.

"A Bushel and a Peck" is like nails on a chalkboard for me - but I like all the rest of them. I think "I've Never Been in Love Before" might be my favorite. Honest to God, why make a movie of a stage musical and then cut 5 songs? I just don't get it. I thought I might buy the DVD of the movie at some point - but I'm not going to now.

Thanks, misspaddylee - I could have sworn that it was cut from "some" production because it was controversial. Glad to see it is in the movie.
