They just tried this recently with Annie, and it didn't work.

You'll have to define "it didn't work."

It made $133M at the box office and made the investors money back.

Well it got some of the worst reviews ever - but actually I didn't realize it made $133M - but I'll bet that's worldwide. It didn't play long at theatres around here. I never want to discourage a musical... but that most recent Annie cut about about 5 songs from the original and added roughly 3 that I thought were pretty terrible.

It recouped based just on domestic $86M box office.
