Looking for good horror films that are actually scary...

I'm not talking about suspense, or gore or torture, and I'm not talking about "Hollywood" horror. I get tired of looking up lists on line for the "XX number of scariest movies ever" and they all have the same tired titles. Blair Witch, Alien, Silence of the Lambs, The Shining, the Fly" Crap on all that. That's Hollywood. I'm talking about scary movies. The stuff that fucks you up for an hour and a half. The movies that grab you by the onions and don't let up. Dark halls, creepy music (and don't say Halloween). Are there really any scary movies anymore that aren't about gore and tits and WAY too much humor?

I understand what you are saying. I'm in the same hunt.

It's difficult to find something truly scary after seeing a lot of horror movies.

I don't know if you will find them scary, but some movies that I find different, beside the typical "XX best scary movies" lists are:

- Seventh Moon
- Livid
- La casa muda
- Noroi: The curse
- The Possession
- The Pact
- The possession of Michael King
- Gallows Hill aka The Damned
- The Den
- Dorothy Mills
- At the devil's door
- When the lights went out
- Session 9
- V/H/S

Thanks for that! I will definitely be looking these up this evening :)

Hereditary was creepy as hell. I know it's Hollywood, but it's top-notch. "Megan is Missing" (2011) also did a number on me. Couldn't get that out of my head for days.

I think hereditary was only good around the end. Then I was like, alright, that was a cool concept. But I feel like it’s a movie that I’d just tell my friends what happened rather than recommending them watching it, because most of it felt like a major waste of time. That’s the only time during a horror movie where I was constantly checking my watch in impatience, waiting for something to happen. Granted, when it finally did, it was good, but it sure felt like an hour+ of my time was wasted to get there.

I don't have anything obscure because most of the obscure stuff doesn't scare me.

The Girl Next Door (2007)
The Last House on the Left (1972)
The Witch 2015
Event Horizon !997
The Ring 2002
Rosemary's Baby
Masters of Horror - various

Hell House LLC was probably the creepiest movie I've watched in the last five years or so. It came out in 2015, but I only saw it last year.

Another user mentioned Megan is Missing. I'll sort of agree. It isn't scary, and the acting is barely okay, but it's disturbing and sticks with you. Couldn't finish the last 15-20 minutes.

Something important to note when watching horror movies that could change your entire perspective is this....you need to set the mood. Horror movies, more than any other genre, should be watched in a particular setting. The point of horror movies is to try and scare you, so you should, as best you can, try to put yourself in the position to allow yourself to be scared.

Ideally, you should watch the movie completely by yourself, with all the lights out, no distractions, headphones on. This makes a world of difference and it makes perfect sense. If you're watching a horror movie during the day, with all the lights on and your children running around screaming there is no way possible that you can be scared by it and in turn you'll be like "that wasn't a scary movie!"

I had a friend years and years ago, I recommended a scary movie to. A week later he told me he watched it and said "that wasn't scary at all." I asked him questions about when/where/how he watched it. He told me he could only watch it in the afternoon because that's the only time he was able to. All three of his kids were awake, playing games in the same room as him, and he was having a conversation through text message with his wife about one of the kid's birthdays coming up. I told him "of course you weren't scared."

It sounds like common sense but it's true, if you think about it. Maybe try that out next time if you don't already do that.

To answer your question: one movie that really creeped me out was 'Session 9'. It is all about atmosphere with that movie and it works well. Maybe check it out.

I would like to recommend the original The Woman in Black from 1989. Let me know what you think.
