If my memory serves correctly, the novelization for Part 2 showed Jason in elementary school.

Not at all. The Halloween remake took that approach, and I really didn't care to know what the killer was like as a kid, or his psychological problems. I prefered it when his killing his sister was completely motiveless and he was some kind of inhuman force of nature.

Not unless it was only a setup for a proper Jason movie. I guess a movie set early in Jason's timeline would work as long as we had as effective of a killer as Pamela Voorhees was.
