OT:Extreme ratings.

I like to go to a movies board and get an idea of what I'm in for before I watch it.Lately instead of getting a sense of the movies worth all I see are ridiculous extremes like worst movie ever made.

A most recent example of this being Jason Bourne.Based on some of the posts for this I thought I was about to watch the equivalent of 2 hours of human excrement being filmed.I mean I wouldn't rated it higher than a 5 but calling it the worst movie ever gives the impression that you haven't seen many movies.

yeah once I read someone describe a movie as "worst ever made" I pretty much skip over to the next reviewer

For some reason, that's the world we live in right now. Everything is the best or the worst. I wish there was a way to track the history of a film's rating. Back when I first joined IMDb 16 years ago, ratings were more modest. Members seemed to recognize what a great movie is, and they were less willing to put a new release on the Top 250 list. Today, it seems like at least 10 movies a year make the Top 250. I find that implausible from a quality standpoint and a little sad from a historical standpoint.

I've often wondered what has created this kind of polemic perception among people in society today, where perception of quality is drawn to the poles. Even the US President seems to view things as either "great" or a "disaster," with nothing in between. So far I have not been able to figure out an answer. I do think it will change, though. Everything always does.

I also wonder kinds of dumbasses keep watching "the worst movie ever made" and then wastes more time going on about how bad it was. I'm not saying the movies I watch are always good, but I wouldn't watch them if there wasn't SOMETHING worthwhile and interesting about them, and I certainly wouldn't waste MORE time REVIEWING them.

On the other hand (not to hijack the thread), it is even more annoying when the entire cast and crew (and their mothers) write GLOWING reviews of obscure horror movies to bolster the "word of mouth". An extreme bad review by some random dumbass won't make me NOT watch a movie, but THAT wlll.

One of the reasons I hardly read the individual movie boards.

I like reading the individual movie boards. You can get some good discussions of a movie sometimes. The people who frequent this board are great, but the pool of opinions here is smaller and more predictable, since we know each other so well.

With individual movie boards, you are more likely going to be exposed to ideas that you wouldn't have gotten otherwise. Sure, there can be a lot of crap, but it's easy not to click on those threads.

I'm the opposite. I view the movie then go to the message board to see what people thought of it. Only if the rating is bellow six do i read the reviews first then watch.

Pretty much every film ever made no matter how great it is has someone calling it the worst movie ever made in a review or on its IMDb board.

"No matter where you go, there you are."

I suspect that 99% of all movies on IMDb have a rating profile that contains both a 10 and a 1.
