Is Salem's Lot (1979) Overrated?

I watched the first hour or so and had to turn it off. Found it very boring. Between watching a writer who doesn't do much writing, an old antique dealer giving everybody the stink eye and a philandering realtor who couldn't sell fish to a starving seal, I don't see what all the fuss is about.

Or is it just me?

It's got a 6.8 average and I rated it 8 so I say it's underrated actually...

reply

No still scary with great characters. I found Ben and Susan to be very sympathetic. Barlow was a true monster

reply

The original is amazing. It is not overrated.

reply

It is NOT overrated, esp for the time. It is a slick and wonderfully intelligent TV mini series, with great characters and actors.

reply

It's one of the best movies based on a SK writing, long movie but still worth seeing. I have it on videocassette!

reply

I'm nostalgic about it but yeah, it's overrated.

reply

It's not overrated at all. It was a 3 hour TV mini series, chopped into 3 hourly episodes.

And watching just an hour of it, isn't the same as watching the whole lot. Obviously.

I watched it from start to finish one night a few weeks ago and it still scared me sh*tless.

One Stephen King adaptation I think is overrated is IT. That was awful. I'm talking about the 1990s mini series. Absolute crap.

I know, I watched it when it originally aired and a number of times since. I don't know what you mean about only watching an hour.

reply

I think he was talking about the OP who only watched an hour.

reply

Ah of course, I had already forgotten. I always assume that by this point everyone knows how forums work.

Often the only way to reply to a thread on here is to reply to the last person who left a message, which can confuse the last person to leave a message into thinking the message left by the last person was for them. IF that makes sense!!!!!

reply

If you reply to the last person, that person gets the notification and the reply is nested underneath. It's possible no one else will see it. Otherwise I don't know what you mean because nothing has prevented me from replying to a thread. But replying to the wrong person isn't going to get the attention of the right one so you might as well reply to the right person whether they are a member or not.

Taste in movies is subjective. To me, at least. 'Salem's Lot had a "creep factor" that went off the scale. Yes, I saw it when I was 12 back in 1979 and I know that nostalgia has a lot to do with my praise for this film.

reply

Depends on which rating you're talking about. It's at 6.8/10 on IMDb and that feels about right. It's certainly clunky but it has some of the scariest vampires and the best vampire scares in any horror movie.

First post on the horror board here! I was pulling for TMDb but the userscript for MC just puts the forums right there on the IMDb movie page and it sure is convenient.
