Can anyone identify this 1940s (post WWII) film?

I've been racking my brain trying to remember the name of this film that I saw on TCM 10+ years ago. Unfortunately, I can only remember pieces, as follows:

1) (Opening) A woman walking on a sidewalk (seaside or over a river) reading a letter (written by a soldier or army buddy) which presumably reveals the address of the soldier’s widow and the woman’s lover.

2) The woman arriving at a house and being invited in by another woman. The two women talk at the kitchen table but the invited woman doesn’t reveal her true identity or contents of the letter.

3) A framed photograph on a desk in another room of the widow’s husband and woman’s lover (recognizably famous).

4) One or two male visitors (well known, black haired) (lawyers? friends?) eventually stop by to discuss the contents of the letter (inheritance? can’t remember). Memory stops here...

Appreciate any help! Driving me nuts! Thanks!

It sounds like it could be "Sunflower" (1971)

It's a great movie. My favorite love story on film.
