Film discussion group: Let's have a vote!

I propose a vote on a few points for structuring the discussion threads and schedule.

Please vote with Yay or Nay on these points:

1. A new film pick every two weeks (on a Sunday/Monday).
Yay (4)/ Nay (1)/ Undecided (0)

2. Moving the discussion threads to the individual film boards.
Yay (3)/ Nay (0)/ Undecided (1)

- An open thread with the roster in the Video board, where the members announce the new picks /with date, so to avoid confusion/.

- After the pick has been posted in the Video board thread, a new thread is opened on that film’s specific board, with the “ATM” marker, as it is here /by the member doing the picking/.

/These two subpoints are just a rough idea for the organising/

NEW! 2.1. Trial period for moving the discussions.
Yay (5)/ Nay (0)/ Undecided (0)

3. Keeping the discussion threads here, as they are now.
Yay (1)/ Nay (2)/ Undecided (1*)

4. Inactive member’s names get italicized in the roster. They can, of course, come back anytime. This is just for clarity's sake :).
Yay (3)/ Nay (0)/ Undecided (1)

NEW! 4.1. Removing inactive members from the roster after a set perioud of time /They can always be added back in!!!/
Yay (3)/ Nay (1)/ Undecided (1)

NEW! 5. Moving the club to GD.
Yay (4)/ Nay (0)/ Undecided (1)

Comments and additional suggestions are welcomed! I’ll add those to the OP for voting as well.

I'm not suggesting that we do away with the voluntary and open-ended nature of the group and discussions. I hope that these points allow for that to remain the same. But I think a little structure wouldn’t be a bad thing. Also, I think it’d be nice to branch out a bit, and contribute to the specific boards as well :).

I'm looking forward to your votes and comments :)

EDIT: Added more points, as well as my votes.

reply

1. yay
2. not sure about this one
3. I lean toward yea here
4. not sure about this

I don't mind a little structure, as long as it doesn't get rigid. Branching out might work, depending on the people who get involved.

reply

Thanks for the comment, Allaby! I've added your votes /I took the "not sure" to mean undecided, please correct me if it's a No/

I don't want it to get too rigid either, just a bit more organised maybe :).

Do you have any suggestions for branching out? Are you opposed a thread in GD inviting interested posters to join for example?

reply

No, I'm not opposed to a thread in GD inviting people to join. For 2.1, I'm a yea and for 5, I'm a yea. I'm undecided on 4.1.

reply

Alright, thanks Allaby! :)

reply

1. yay- thought we should have done this from the beginning.
4. yay- quite a few of the original bunch is inactive. At least last time I checked.

I'm still torn on whether or not to bring these discussions to the main board. When this first started I was against it.
Now I'm leaning towards it. Let's face it we have lost a good portion of the people we began with.
Why? I'm sure it depends.
People leave the site, they just don't like the group, lack of structure, lack of being able to watch the movies that were picked or limited people discussing the film.

If we take it to the film board we can still talk about it. We also can get input from other fans of that film. Which is why
we are all here.
This also leaves the opportunity for trolls and undesirables to step in. But we have the possibility to deal with them
no matter what we do. So far we haven't had any issues by staying here.

So like I said I'm torn. We could always try it for a month and see what happens. If it doesn't work out we can
always come back home.

reply

Thanks, Dewey! Added the votes.

That was my thinking of moving the threads to the film's boards.

I don't think trolls and undesirables are a big concern. I'm sure people already know that this group exists in the Video board, and as you said, we haven't had any issues this far.

I like your trial period idea to see if it works.

reply

1. y
2. like the idea of trial period in GD
3. discussion should also move to GD
4. should pick a set amount of time and remove names from the list if not heard from after that time.

reply

Thanks, keybored! Added your votes.

I don't think moving the whole thing to GD would be a bad thing really. The "What did you watch this week" threads have been going strong there, and there isn't an issue with trolling and the like.

reply

I think it would be better because not everybody looks through all the sections of the site and many may have missed the video section because of this.

Putting it in GD makes more sense and gives it a wider audience.

'Video' also implies and older format, where you have discs and streaming now.

reply

Good points. I still think we should have the film discussions themselves on the film specific boards. The other posters there should be ones who are interested in that film anyway. Also we could really bring some more life in the individual boards this way.

Maybe have just the organisational threads (roster, picks, etc.) in GD.

reply

I've added three more points for voting on.

reply

I have no problem with moving it to GD or removing inactive members. We can always add them back in .
If we move to GD then I don't see why we don't post discussions on the movie board.
It will be trending, but only until somebody else posts. It's always a timing thing when it comes to trending.
It will open it up for more people to discuss the movies.
We can always start the discussions and anybody who wants to add something can.

reply

I agree with your points :).

reply

Just wondering if maybe we shouldn't have a film club section instead and keep it all in there? I'm sure Jim would make one if we decided it was a good idea and asked him to make one.

reply

I was thinking the same thing as well. It would be so nice to have a specificly designated section of the site where the film club could congregate, and also to have the option for different posters to share OP duties on a thread (for rosters and the like). God knows we have all those other useless sections left over from IMDB, that get zero traffic now. It would be cool if sections specific to MC were added.

I don't know if Jim would think it's a priority though (we're still waiting for the ignore feature to be fixed). If this gets big enough though, and active enough, I don't see why we can't try and ask for one, though.

reply

Hi Mina! I may be butting in here, but I have to say that I like some of your ideas!
I like the idea of posting a roster of what you will be watching on the GB. After you choose a film, I really think it's a great idea to go to that particular film's board to discuss! It really gets that film trending! It's also a good way to get more discussion going with others who may enjoy that film.
It really is better for the site too!
I know that I would be more inclined to check out what you folks are watching and if I liked the film, I'd join in on your conversations.
Hope you all work it out this way!

reply

Hey MissMargo! Thanks! (and you're not butting in at all)

That's the idea with moving the discussions to the film's board. If the trial period works out we have a great opportunity to get some of those boards moving again and attract other posters to them!

I'll be very glad if you decided to come back to the club!

reply

I may just do that. I don't think that many people come here to Video. Some may not even know about it. There are people around who love to talk about movies. Ones who don't even look in on the GB. If they saw more films trending, I think that there could be some fairly good discussions. It's worth a shot, anyway.
If you all decide to try it, I'll be looking for the roster and the films you decide on.

reply

I hope you decide to come back too.
When we started it was chaotic. We've have watched some great movies.
We just need more people involved and a little more structure. I think we had the right idea just the
wrong approach.
Best part is if you want to watch it you can. If you don't want to watch it then you don't have to.
Not to mention you can never have too many cheeseheads.

reply

LOL! This Cheesehead is on board if you all decide to try some of those changes.
I confess that I was interested at first, but some of the rules sort of turned me off.
We were all new here, and still sort of stumbling around after the big shutdown.
I agree that this was a good idea, but as you say, the wrong approach. Now that we know some of the things that could make this site better, I really think this would be a fun way to get people on the individual movie boards talking more.

reply

Good point about the people who don't look into the general boards. I see a lot of "unfamiliar faces" on the individual boards, that I don't remember seeing on GD or the like. So it certainly broadens the pool of potential members, or people who just want to talk about the movies :)

reply

That is an excellent idea, keybored!

Mina,
Sorry to take so long to respond, but I just returned from a Safari Trip in Kenya and Tanzania. (It was fantastic!)
Here are my thoughts:

1. I'm not a fan of a lot of rules, so I would say nay on time limits.

2. After a film has been chosen I see no problem with moving the thread to the individual film board. A trial period sounds
reasonable.

4. I have no problem with italicizing or deleting inactive members' names. Allaby, Godeway, Keybored, Moviefan225 and you are the only members I've heard from in the last month. I think we should go ahead and delete the other names at this time. They seem to be gone. At some point some of them might return.

5. I'm not sure about moving to General Discussion. However, it should generate more response. I heard from MissMargoChanning that someone named Shiney (I think) was floating the idea of a group like ours on the GB.
Perhaps we should contact him/her?

PS That Poster's name is ShinyMcShine. I asked if he/she would be interested in joining our group.

PPS As far as I am concerned, this is the Roster:

Allaby
Godeway
Keybored
MinaVladimir
Moviefan225
MovieManCin2 (me)

I have already deleted the others from the Roster. If they want to return at a later date, they would be welcome to do so as far as I am concerned.

"Shoot! A guy could have a pretty good weekend in Vegas with all that stuff."

reply

Ixnay on the whole deleting thing MovieMan. I have found my way home. With a little help from my friends.

I had to go and make a few mistakes so I could find out who I am
I'm letting all of these feelings out even if it means I fail
Cause this is what I was meant to do and you can't put that on sale

BTW. Welcome back.

reply

Thanks, Godewey! I appreciate that. BTW, I just realized I just spelled you name wrong again. Sorry. I think I have a mental block there.

BTW, is that a poem you're quoting there?

😎

reply

Spell it however you want. It only matters to certain people. :) One of them is not me.

No, it's from a song. I thought it fit. It actually fits in life also.

reply

I just realized what my mental block is. "Way" is a common word. "Wey" is not.

BTW, what is the name of the song?

😎

reply

That's me . As uncommon as they come.

It's by a group called Weezer. From the song Back to the Shack. One of their more famous is songs is
called Buddy Holly.
They were big in the 90's then started changing their sound. This song was about them
apologizing to their original fans for forgetting them.

reply

Interesting, thanks. I'll check out the You Tube video for that song.

😎

reply

Hey, MovieMan, I'm glad you had a great vacation! I've added your votes.

The time limit is only for when a new thread "goes live". No time limit has been proposed for the discussions themselves. Those are open forever :)

I don't know if Moviefan225 checks in that often, so he might miss this here discussion. Do you mind sending him a PM to come by and give his thought?

I'm still not for full on deleting people. We can't really italicize at this time, because of the formatting bug, but that's still my preference. I know that if I saw my name deleted from the roster, I wouldn't be that inclined to come back.

Have you heard back from ShinyMcShine?

I really think that if we are to continue and get new people to join, we need to move.

I'll try to contact Sentient Meat, since I think I saw them on a thread these past few days.

I feel like I wanted to say more, but I forgot what that was lol.

reply

Mina,
Thanks! I could send Moviefan225 a private message, but how do I do that? I've never done it before (old skol guy here).
ShinyMcShine said he/she would consider it. I haven't heard anything since.

😎

"Fruitcake anyone?

reply

You go into their profile by clicking on their user name in any thread. When you're in their profile, under the user name, there is a "message" thingy with a little envelope next to it. Click on it, and after that it's pretty much like posting a comment.

reply

I've been thinking. Sorry Mina, I know you don't like when I think too much. :)

When do most people watch their movies ? During the week or the weekend. If more people watch on the weekend
maybe it might be better to name the movie on a Wednesday or Thursday to keep it a little more active in the GD board.
For Instance if we pick the movie on a Sunday and most people don't watch until Friday or Saturday that could be 6 days
that the post would get lost. If it varies then Sunday/Monday would work.
The other thing is 1 movie every two weeks. Is this too long? We don't want to pressure people but we also don't
want to start the discussions and then let it sit there for a week with nothing happening.
Just my random thoughts.

reply

Changing the day of the week is cool with me. I just picked it because that's how you count weeks lol. But the middle of the week could work just as well, if not better.

As for the two weeks, I was going by what the time period for the activity of the discussions was here in the beginning (to the best of my recollection). About two weeks was the streach of time it took for a discussion to "exhaust" itself. Plus, we have to have allowances for different schedules, looking for the movie and all that. I think responces are going to start rolling in at the earliest a few days after the pick was made. Basically, a week to look for and watch the movie and another week for discussing. And if we do go discuss on the individual boards, it wouldn't matter that much, I don't think. All we need to worry about is bumping the "film picks" thread in GD, so that people know where to go and what to watch.

Does any of this make sense lol?

We'll see if the two weeks are too much, though. If they are, we can make it one.

P.S. I do not not like it when you think! I'm a bit unsure of the results of that thinking sometimes though :P

reply

It does make sense. We can always tweak it if need be.
Maybe bumping would something simple like every couple days we just add a comment like
"Come watch this movie and join in the discussion." Just something simple to keep it active.

I have been thinking for MOST of my life. Sometimes even I'm not crazy with the results.

reply

Yeah. Even a simple "bump" would work for our purposes. We could also put a little "invitation" message at the end of each film thread, with links directing people to the other threads, so that it's easier to find them.

This turned out to be more complicated that I thought! lol

reply

It's always more complicated. Good things usually are.
I say we do the final count and this ball rolling.
If anybody want's to join we can just add them.

reply

Yup, I agree.

reply

I think 1 movie every 2 weeks is good enough. I gives every a fair amount of time to fit one in and they can always add to movies they have missed later on anyway.

Are we nearly ready to restart ATM then and have we decided who/what/where/when/how/why?

reply

We should be darn close. We should try to get done by the weekend.

reply

Yeah, we should be close. I'll open another thread for ironing out the details, and we should be on our way.
