Everything We Know So Far About The Accidental Prime Minister

The rage of biographical films in Bollywood is greater than ever. From sports stars, to controversial political personalities to film actors, no one is spared a story. One of the latest celebrated persons to have a biographical film is the economist and former Prime Minister of India, Dr. Manmohan Singh. In a film directed by Vijay Ratnakar Gutte, Anupam Kher plays the titular role and the first look of the movie was released early June, where the actor is a spitting image of the person he aims to portray.

Titled The Accidental Prime Minister, this biographical drama is based on the memoir of the same name, written by Sanjaya Baru. The writer himself makes an appearance in the film, having been a political commentator and Manmohan Singh’s media advisor in the past. His role is essayed by famous Bollywood star, Akshaye Khanna, who was last seen in the mystery thriller, Ittefaq. Other prominent personalities in the film include Sonia Gandhi (played by the German-born Suzanne Bernert), Aahana Kumra (who plays Priyanka Gandhi, daughter of Sonia), and Arjun Mathur (who plays Rahul Gandhi, son of Sonia and current president of the Indian National Congress). Additionally, Vimal Verma as Lalu Prasad Yadav, Avter Saini as Lal Krishna Advani, Anil Rastogi as Shivraj Patil, Ajit Satbhai as P. V. Narasimha Rao, and Chitragupta Sinha as P. V. Ranga Rao also make appearances. A picture of the full cast was tweeted by Taran Adarsh, which also revealed that the film will hit theatres on the 21st of December, 2018.

While it seems like fans of political biographies and the man himself are likely to have an early Christmas present, the film is all set to clash with the much-awaited Shah Rukh Khan starrer, Zero. There’s no telling that the latter is likely to grab both media headlines and box office collections, but The Accidental Prime Minister is liable to have an impact through honest performances and stronger content. This film is based on the true story of a much-debated man in Indian politics and veteran actor Anupam Kher will do complete justice to the role. No actor seems better suited to take on this character and from the looks of the posters, the actor has already made his mark on the audience. Music by Salim-Sulaiman will also add a fine touch to this highly anticipated film.

It remains to see whether The Accidental Prime Minister can leave its mark in Bollywood as the year of content-rich stories comes to an end. The political angle of the film is likely to draw much attention from prominent personalities and since there hasn’t been a legal notice sent to the filmmakers yet, all seems to be going well for this Bohra Bros. production. The trailer of the film is eagerly awaited as much as the movie itself and should hit the Internet any day now.
