Tully: A Close Examination of Modern Motherhood


Motherhood has never been examined with the due importance it deserves in popular culture. TV shows like Nashville, Susanna, Girls, Black-ish and Jane the Virgin have portrayed new mothers in a realistic manner. The two stand-up specials by comic Ali Wong offers a much needed depiction of motherhood.

Finally, mainstream Hollywood has listened to the woes of all mothers. Tully, a comedy-drama starring Charlize Theron as Marlo Moreau, along with Machenzie Davis as Tully, Mark Duplass as Marlo’s brother Craig and Rob Livingston as Marlo’s husband Drew Moreau. Tully, directed by Jason Reitman and written Cody Diable premiered at 2018 Sundance Film Festival to amazing critic reviews.

For her role as Marlo, Charlize Theron had gained nearly 50 pounds and ate around the clock to maintain her weight gain.

The plot of the movie revolves around Marlo, a forty-year-old mother of two who is pregnant with an unplanned third child. Her second child, Jonas might have an unidentified developmental disorder. When Marlo and Drew visit her wealthy brother Craig for dinner, he offers to pay for a night-nanny as a baby shower gift, which she refuses. After giving birth to Mia, Marlo becomes exhausted and overwhelmed coping up with motherhood.

She receives a phone call from Jonas’ school principal, asking her to send her kid to another school. On hearing this news, she almost breaks down and finds the contact details for the night nurse. Tully, the night nanny visits here. The two develop an unlikely bond and they even engage in a threesome with Marlo’s husband Drew.

Soon things take a turn where Tully takes Marlo for drinks where she reveals that she would be quitting the job soon. While returning, Marlo falls asleep at the wheel, and swerves the car into a river. In the hospital, it becomes evident that Tully was just a figment of Marlo’s imagination. The movie ends with Marlo cooking dinner while listening to music.

Tully was released in the United States on May 4, 2018 and will be released in India in December this year.
