How and why do sequel writers get away with blatantly wrecking previous films?
I've recently have been watching a lot of slasher movies and I've noticed the sequels have a habit of erasing previous installments and their satisfying conclusions. They do this by either:
1)Killing off previous final characters extremely early and/or in a cheap manner
2)Having major retcons to things that happened
3) Ignoring the ending of the previous movie
It makes me really angry as now it makes me think I've wasted 90 minutes of my life and that the writers are actually trying to make me not like their movie.
However what I want to know is how does this happen noticably often? Do the writers feel good about hating their fanbase? Is there just a lack of care? Am I the one that is not understanding this properly?
