How can you tell when an actor/actresses' rather sporadic film appearances over the last few years are more to do with

...do with choice than simply because not that many people have roles for them?

It depends on who that actor's agent is or if they're close collaborators with writers and directors who were fans of their work when they were more famous.

Writer/producer Ryan Murphy of American Horror Story casts actors who have been absent from the limelight for personal or poor box office related perceptions reasons. So you can take that as an example. He's cast people like Mare Winningham, Wes Bentley who were both mostly absent from the big screen.

reply

so he's the tarantino of tv? lol. also another factor is an actor being in more than 1 critically bad movie in 2 years time. look at gina gerson for evidence of this, actually with her it was one film that people misperceived as being bad, showgirls. also making bad role choices ala megan fox not being in tranformers 3. also there is an actresses' looks ala gwenyth paltrow. by about 35 every actress experiences this if they aren't a great actor. whereas actors don't experience this at about 35 if they aren't a great actor often times.

reply

I think Gwyneth Paltrow is that way, I feel like yeah she likes acting but it’s no longer her biggest passion, it’s like if she gets work it’s cool and if she doesn’t too.

She is like sort of retired but it’s by choice, I’ve never heard her complain there aren’t enough roles for women and ageism.

She is okay with rarely working.

I sort feel the same way with George Clooney, the media loves him and also his co stars but he rarely works anymore.

reply

well he's never been a great actor so most of the reason why he's not acting anymore is due to him not being a great actor.

reply

He ain’t Daniel Day Lewis but he is a respected actor in Hollywood. The best maybe not he is very charismatic and enjoyable to watch.

reply

who are you talking about?

reply

About Clooney you said he is not working anymore because he is not a great actor but I said well maybe not great but highly respected and that could give him a lot of chances to still working.

reply

ok george clooney has never been a great actor. that's unquestionable and that is one factor. also he's not charismatic or enjoyable to watch onscreen most of the time. most of the time since he's not a great actor he dials it in. point of reference gravity. he was just being george clooney, playing himself in that movie.

now that's not to say he's never been charismatic he was charismatic in out of sight and from dusk till dawn and he was mesmerizing in syriana, he gave a great performance in it but those performances are few and far in between. even his charismatic performances are few and far in between. so you add those factors up and he's not acting in movies anymore.

reply

ok, so keep in mind a big reason why we don't see actresses like gwyneth paltrow anymore is because they are 35 and older. most movies feature actresses who are between 20-30 years old in the main girl or woman role or roles. so like porn(only 18-25 please) movies just have to only feature 20-30 year old girls and women in the main girl and woman role or roles.

reply

Yes there is sadly some ageism with female actors but with Gwyneth in particular. I feel like she really doesn’t care for acting anymore. I think for her it’s lik yeah I had a nice career and now I’m fine with semi retirement.

I feel the same way about Julia Roberts who still got nominated like in 2012 which is not that long ago and her last Nominees roundtable she was very chilled about not working like she used to.

I feel like most actresses of the 90s are pretty okay with not being the hottest star anymore. I think for them it’s like okay we got the best decade to be actresses when it was much more glamours and was a much bigger deal.
We are okay not being part of this new film era.

reply

i love how you said actresses of the '90s time was more prestigious than nowadays, '00s to now. so true. i think the reasons why it had prestige being an actor in the '90s but not since the '00s is because actors don't take their careers as serious nowadays as they did in the '90s. you used to have to care about acting as an actor and often times had to do plays on broadway before becoming a movie actor.

also the whole reality tv thing really screwed up acting in movies because again the "actors" who act in movies nowadays don't have the pedigree of '90s actors because they started out as just people on reality tv shows. this is such a shame and is so wrong.

oh and ageism also exists among actors not just actresses because most actor by the time they reach 35 are not used that much at all in starring roles in movies.

reply

Well I actually right now think actors have to love their craft because the payment isn’t as huge it used to except for when we talk about actors portraying superheroes.

Right now every beautiful girl doesn’t want to be an actress anymore they want to be Youtubers or Instagram Models.

Acting isn’t the ultimate job for the new beautiful women, it’s not the hottest most glamorous job anymore.

Why because general movie goers care less every day about award shows which where we always got the Glam.

Entertainment has changed a lot due to YouTube and streaming services but mainly YouTube. People don’t want anymore a tv producer to tell them when to turn on their TVs and when will they watch specific shows. People now want to always decide what to watch and with award shows they don’t get that.

All the glamour and the importance of celebrities happened at the award shows have you all award shows ratings have gone down and less celebrities assist every year. RDj doesn’t go to those shows anymore and from to 2008 where he had his career revival till 2014 he always went to all award shows. After 2014 he hasn’t assisted anymore to award shows.

I think all these actors feel something weird with this new movie which is all about franchises and people loving actors as long they portray the characters they love.

People love RDJ as long he is portraying Tony Stark/ Iron Man, the same for Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, the Bond actors, the twilight stars and many more.

Entertainment and movies have changed so much that actresses like Gwyneth prefer to semi retire they can’t deal with this new system.

And I think many male actors do still have great work after their 30s just look at RDJ his career got new life at 43 with Iron Man.

Brad Pitt and Clooney also had their best time at Their 40s.

But my point was that I think actors who are working now are the people who really like acting there aren’t any Megan Fox or similar.

reply

what does megan fox have to do with your last point about actors acting nowadays being the people who really like acting?

what i hate more than anything is this new internet, social media celebrity maker. people who have no business being famous and making it in the entertainment industry are making it in the entertainment industry, the worst example of this is kim kardashian. where is the work, the devotion to a craft to get famous and to get a career in Hollywood and the entertainment industry? also this hurts the people who actually are devoted to the craft of acting and who put in all the work to be good at acting because they get less credit and exposure when everyone is talking about and looking at and watching kim kardashian.

the other thing i don't like is how you only see actors who start out for about 10 years before a new group of actors are in movies. and sometimes this time is only 5 years. what ever happened to tobey maguire and kirsten dunst, people like them? i mean half the new actors in Hollywood who get main, starring roles in movies i don't know. this is wrong. it used to be you could count on knowing who is in the movies that you watch, we had stalwart stars. now it's always who's the next it girl or guy.

reply

Yes it changes too fast, it’s like actors are popular for maybe 3 years maximum or well maybe more if they are starring a successful movie franchise.

About Megan Fox my point is that we rarely see beautiful women to be actresses just because of the pay and because they want to be famous.
The beautiful girls who wanted to be actresses just because of the perks of getting designer stuff and the whole glitz and Glam have moved to be Youtubers. Now not single Girl without talent or love or love for the craft want to be an actress.

That was my point, now there is not space for untalented girls on film.

With Kim Kardashian I wouldn’t stress about it, I think people care for her and reality stars less and less everyday because their fans have stopped watching tv. They now all watch Youtube and their own stars.

Now everyone wants to be a YouTuber.

I’d thank YouTube so much for this. no actors who are in the business just because of the perks of being famous.

reply

and this trend and cycle and system started around the late '90s i would say. bc before this time all the big stars in Hollywood stayed stars in Hollywood for at least 20 years, like julia roberts and tom hanks. the problem with this new system is half the time i don't recognize or even know by name who the stars in Hollywood are. and i'm always pretty up to date when it comes to movies, actors and actresses. so this new system is wrong. and it needs to change really soon.

i also hate how basically anyone can become a star nowadays with all the freaking insane amount of online streaming movie and tv show circuits and outlets. oh and because of you tube of course. i mean come on. there has to be some quality control and discretion amongst the people who govern who becomes a star in the entertainment industry.

i also blame all the reality glorified talent shows like american idol for this wrong system. it's just too easy to become a star in the entertainment industry nowadays. you don't have to work for it, you don't have to be talented, you just have to be interesting and different. this is so wrong. i mean back in the '80s all we had for this star making system was star search but most of the people on there didn't become stars bc they were on it.

so all the aspiring singers, actors, songwriters, producers, comedians, etc. out there need to do it the right way. go on a talk show, do your stand up, send in your demo tape to a music recording company, work on broadway as an actor, act in plays to prove yourself as an actor, take acting lessons at a film school.

well maybe the reason why girls don't want to be actresses anymore is because of this wrong system which dictates that actresses aren't in starring roles for longer than 5 years nowadays?

but i thought all the girls acting nowadays don't have acting talent, i thought they are more into the entrepreneur kind of thing with getting clothing deals, makeup deals, merchandising. i'm thinking of girls like ari

reply

anna grande. it doesn't seem like she cares about acting, she just wants to be a part of all around entertainment avenues.

what do you mean there is no space for untalented actresses? i thought you were saying there is no love for the craft of acting by actress nowadays?

that's wrong that girls like megan fox don't care about the craft of acting and are just acting to be rich and famous.

but what i hate about kim kardashian and her show is since her show was the first huge reality show and she was the first huge reality show star this show is never going to end. i've heard the popularity of kim kardashian is slowing down but it's still on and it just got renewed for 3 more years??!! a year ago. so we are still going to have to put up with it for 2 more years? really? this is so wrong. i mean how long can this show possibly be on for and how long can she possible be famous? we are now at almost 12 years since it started.

who are the people who watch you tube watching now? you said they now watch their own stars? so who are these stars? so you think because of you tube we don't have actresses who only want to become famous? how is this true? and you are saying girls like megan fox have really short careers because they don't care about acting and just want to be payed a lot of money and be famous?

reply

Ok I don’t think acting is most popular job in entertainment anymore and for that reason, there aren’t anymore talentless actors.

I think youtube has saved acting more than ruining it.
If someone wants to be a celebrity they don’t choose acting anymore.

There is no more I want to be an actress because it’s cool and getting all the designer stuff.

I used to hate Kim kardashian and similar but I now just don’t care about it, those stars never really stole important roles from big actors. Sure more people who weren’t really exactly movie buffs liked them.

I sure do miss a little the movie industry of the 90s and how big the Oscars and award shows were at that time, well award shows still did will until maybe 2014. it’s since 2015 or 2016 when the Oscars and all award shows really lost their appeal to general audiences the ratings were dropping constantly.

But I’ve learned If I constantly live out of nostalgia and missing the old stuff. I will loose more.

In the early 00s I was like I wished Pierce brosnan was making comeback or another 90s Star and I was sad that my favorite 90s stars didn’t go. I guess at that Time I was obsessed for Catherine Zeta Jones to make a comeback that I didn’t appreciate that there was still a strong movie industry and the Oscars were still a big deal.

What I regret is not appreciating that the Oscars were still going strong, some years better than others but at least the Oscars were still popular and took them for granted that they always would be.

Never expected Streaming services to take the Oscars away.

There is always a good and bad side to everything

And with all due respect my friend you are getting a little stuck into the past.its hard to stay with the present sometimes and accept it but take the good side.

The music industry changed first due to Napster and the latter the invention of the IPod.

Technology has changed all entertainment and it’s better to take the good part.

reply

Really it’s important to enjoy what we have.

Yes the industry changes crazy fast and actors become popular and unpopular in a matter of days.

This is the era of movie franchises instead of movies stars. Movie series are like brands.
There is still love for many actors but in a different way that we got them in the 90s.

Example Jennifer Lawrence she was the most popular star while she was doing The Hunger Games but once she left the franchise bye bye Jennifer Lawrence and it’s because people loved her as Katniss Everdeen and it’s all the same with every actor leading a movie franchise.

Tom Cruise has been a very smart guy he understood the change and learned to survive it.

He as one of the producers of MI did all his best to make that franchise one of the strongest to the point that now MI is way better than Bond when in the 90s Mission Impossible was the poor man’s version of James Bond.

Now because of what he did with MI he still has career for another 10 years because people might not like Tom Cruise Alone anymore but people do love him when he is going crazy with his action stunts in Mission Impossible.

When Gwyneth was promoting one of the Iron Man films she talked about the film industry’s change and said there is no space for mid budget movies you either go with independent directors or go the franchise root.

At the end my point is Enjoy what we have and live in the present. We can still see a film decade with more fondness and sort of miss but we shouldn’t get carried away by that.

I will miss my award shows it seems like soon they will disappear but something else to enjoy will come to us.

reply

what do you mean if you live in the past you will lose more? what will you lose of the present if the present sucks? i also hate how if you go down any street in the us you will see everyone looking at their cellphone. i mean like we aren't just mindless robots but it appears we are because we all do this all the time?

also i hate how the craft and art of directing movies is now not around. movies all look the same now. it's all bright, colorful looking movies. where is the attention to art direction and cinematography to make a film look artful?
it used to be that watching a film was just as much about the artisticness of the look and mood of a film as the acting but now movies don't take you away as much with the look and feel of them bc this lack of art direction and cinematography. now it's about making cheap movies that won't be respected years from now.

why is it wrong for me to get sad over how unoriginal the entertainment industry is nowadays. i mean music is nothing, no good music nowadays in mainstream music. the movie industry is making nothing but remakes, sequels and prequels that no one asked for and then making up a term called a reboot or re-imagining to cover up the fact that it's just another lazy remake.

the oscars were too female only and black centric which was obvious and stupid. i mean make your point but don't do it in such an obvious and heavy handed way about female rights and black rights. the oscars didn't even have a host this year which is unacceptable. i mean we need an oscars host to make the awards special and to make it less serious of an event oh and to reach out to the audience and say we love movies just like you do.

my friend i've been this way this cynical about the entertainment industry since 1995. that was the year where you can clearly see a dropoff in quality music, movies, and tv shows.

the one good thing about nowadays is how you can watch movies for free online. i mean with how expensive comcast is for cable you should get free movies.

why do you think i'm getting too stuck in the past?

reply

Well not wrong to be sad but there are some good things in this industry.

The franchise system is not as bad as you think it is, it’s just about to find one that you like.

Why don’t you try watching the first Iron Man film and do the Marvel Cinematic Universe marathon. That will open to this wonderful genre and find out that a blockbuster is not always a bad idea.

I was in your place once but found out being mad at this system served for nothing and if I was so against this system I would never go to the movies again so I opened my mind to this Frame system.

Is not about standing against it my friend find the one the one you like to join it.

reply

oh my gosh, i know what you mean about the oscars. this year when i watched i couldn't believe how it had like no stars. where was julia roberts, sandra bullock, tom cruise, tom hanks, robert de niro, al pacino, brad pitt, leonardo di caprio, matt damon? i mean i couldn't believe that the oscars, always the most important awards show didn't have any stars except maybe 5.

and annoyingly, instead we got all these black women who i don't know. the other thing annoying about this year's oscars was the big women's rights movement going on which was so obvious and blatant it was annoying. also i hated how it was all about black women who i don't know, again that was too obvious and blatant.

also where was the host? where was the host? you can't not have an oscars host. this is unacceptable. why in the world did they not have a host this year? a host is needed to make the show entertaining and less boring and more relatable to people watching at home and to make it more fun and less uptight and serious.

reply

that's a really good topic of discussion. i've always wondered what are the factors that determine an actor not getting that much work in movies? is it that they are not a star? is is that they don't won't to work that much anymore? is it they are too old to play characters in a lot of movies? most movies have young 20-50 year old characters playing the main roles.
