(SOLVED) swords and sorcerers type movie from the 1980s or early 1990s

I saw part of this movie on TV about 30 years ago. It looked to me like a relatively recently movie. The part where I started watching showed a man in a castle lying on the floor and dying. In his final moments he picked up a sword or part of a sword and moved it. The movie then showed a woman and small boy who I assumed to be the wife and son of the man who just died. The woman then met up this goblin sort of creature and appeared to get intimate with him. The woman then disappeared from the movie and this creature appeared to raise the boy to adulthood. The grown boy then met up with a young woman his age somewhere. The man and woman were then in some sort of bar or restaurant where he rescued another woman being picked on by some sort of ruffian. That woman later came up to him and he embraced her and she died in his arms. I think that was supposed to be the mom. The man then returned to the creature and in a violent rage demanded an explanation but the creature was somehow able to subdue him.
