The Bloody Mutilators - SOLVED

I'm re-reading Stephen King's nonfiction book Danse Macabre and watching all the movies he mentions that I haven't seen (this is QUITE a task, it's been over a year so far and I'm not even halfway through!), and now I'm stuck on one called The Bloody Mutilators. I can't find any reference anywhere online to a movie with this title ever existing. Either he made it up as a joke or it's the alternate title to a different movie? Anyone have any thoughts/ideas?

Maybe he was referring to this same-named student movie mentioned here https://theschlockpit.com/2021/01/09/baby-boom-the-unborn-1991/ or this similar named https://bloody-disgusting.com/reviews/3381178/blu-ray-review-mutilator-definitive-slasher/ unless he wasn't referring to an actual movie but the genre of 'bloody mutilators'?

You would have to paste what was said for more clarity.

Unfortunately it's not either of those, as the book was published in 1980, and pre-dates both; the book covers horror movies from 1950-1980. Should have mentioned that.

"You could walk down 42nd Street in Times Square on any given afternoon or evening and discover films with names like The Bloody Mutilator, The Female Butcher, or The Ghastly Ones..."

He then goes on to detail a specific scene in The Ghastly Ones, leading me to believe that these aren't just random names he made up. I've already found that and The Female Butcher.

IMDB lists a 1979 movie called The Dark, which was also known as The Mutilator. Could be that one being referred to?

reply

It's possible it's just a type of generic title he coined intended to be representative of slasher films. Or maybe it was something produced by a local independent filmmaker that was shown only once at some sort of art theater.

reply

The latter is what I think it is as there are several references to the student movie with that name made by Rodman Flender and it would have been the same time period that he was starting out.

It's possible it was shown in some indie theater as you suggest and that King happened to have seen it there.

Oh wow, good find. I bet that's it... "an animated film featuring rats eating supermodels," of course. Guess I won't be able to see that one!

He's active on twitter, you should ask him. Not sure if he reads his messages but you never know 🤷‍♀️

reply

Rodman Flender or King? I doubt King would remember, I think this book was during his heavy drug period, haha. Plus he's seen probably 30,000 movies since then!

reply

Oh never mind then 😅
