Am I mixing 2 movies?

70s movie, possibly late 60.

All I remember is at the beginning the guys were driving a car at nigh down a twisty road and had a bet about hitting poles on the side of the road (?).

Makes no sense but it's what I remember.

At one point they stopped because they started arguing about whether they hit a pole or not.

I thing there might have been an evil sheriff pushing people off the road, but that is also in The California Kid, so I may be mixing two movies...
