this movie is driving me CRAZY...

please help me, I've looked everywhere else.

there is an old movie, probably from the 80s. it's about an old homeless(?) white man who finds a homeless black boy and takes him home. they even start on a puzzle together. the man takes him around to meet others and forage for cans. at some point, the boy gets mad and runs away. the man finds him nearly dead from pneumonia, brings him back home, fusses over him and feeds him soup. eventually, the end credits show the puzzle finally put together--it was a ship.
