Looking for a movie that ends with a woman and a child in a basement with dark things trying to get in. The woman accidently hits the child in the head with an axe killing her. As soon as this happens, the dark things stop trying to get in.

that sounds weird but interesting ;-) ...could it be some Italian slasher / giallo movie? (There's a movie from early 80s or so, made in Italy, starring Giovanni Frezza and others, called "A House near the Cemetary" which has a similar scene... at a point, the kid is locked in a cellar because the door doesn't open anymore; a zombie tries to get at him, and I think mom tries to crush the door with an axe. But (luckily ;-) the kid doesn't get hurt! - My idea is that the movie you are searching for might have been made by some other director of the same "genre".
Do you remember whether this was an American movie, or rather one from Europe?

As the OP doesn't seem to be 'round here anymore - is there anyone else who has seen any similar scenes? I really would like to know which movie that is... And who on earth played the boy?
I'm afraid without any info about the date of production of this movie, there's only a small chance that the movie might ever get identified...
Edit, some minutes after I wrote this post: I completely overlooked that the movie hasn't a BOY actor as victim - the OP wrote "...killing HER...". That might narrow down the number of movies a little bit - on the other hand now I'm sure it's not in MY collection...
