WARNING; Proboards admins (like IMDb 2.0) can see your IP address

Don't trust the newly created IMDB 2.0 board or similar boards that were created this last week. The people who set them up have access to your IP address and personal info. I've seen some really ugly drama in similar boards where admins extort users and make their private information public. It's a troll's heaven. Just a warning.

reply

really? You think so? Glad you told me.

Where do you suggest we all go to?

reply

I figured as much, about the information, not about the drama. The same information is gathered at many sites and I'm guessing this one as well. Your IP address is one way of identifying you and preventing multiple accounts. I guess if you don't trust the site admins, it's not worth joining.

reply

Ok, I get it - you're laughing because of the number of sock puppet accounts here, right? Well, it is supposed to prevent that, but somehow they miss.... I think people set them up with proxies, which is something that I understand in theory, but have no idea how to do or access.

Every site I've ever administrated has IP and sign-up email address info, at a minimum, for administrative purposes. I always found the email address a more useful tool for weeding out trolls than the IP address though. You can search an email address to see if it's connected to a real person through other social media and web accounts. Of course you can use this info to dox people but that's where the trust comes in.

On a side note, free boards like proboards etc limit what info administrators and mods can see. Message boards set up on a personal website gives the administrator access to every bit of info on the site, including personal messages, where people are clicking your link (facebook, other boards, search engines, etc.), what OS and current browser you are using, if mobile it will list your provider. The amount of info available from a privately owned website is considerable. Free boards are a lot safer if you are the paranoid type, but with free boards, you face what we have here- the fate of the board is determined by some faceless person who can shut the board down without reason or warning.

reply

It is the same deal all the forums have. I have never had a problem. If that is what you're worried about don't join any forums.

reply

Maybe, but the IM site is legit. The administrators are there and you can their photos, bio, et cetera. They're not anonymous.

The only info an IP shows is city, state, country.

It's more risky to have a Facebook account.

Doxxers need other info besides IP to dox people.

The new site doesn't require your real email, credit card info or anything like that.
