He took creative license to make big raptors. Ironically just about when the movie was released, paleontologists actually discovered a species of Raptor that stood about six foot tall.
And just recently they discovered an even larger species.

The dancer in Saturday Night Fever. The original R rated release, when they rereleased it as PG, the scene was cut.
Maybe the person who created the poster didn't know the configuration of the egg. The poster did come almost a year before the movie premiered.
The original intention of the Halloween franchise was to have each movie explore a different theme related to the holiday. Halloween III was supposed to be the first of those. Unfortunately, fans complained because it wasn't Michael Myers (although he was seen it it) so the producers caved.
