Just watched it today over Netflix and it's one of the best time investments, ever. Such a beautifully crafted film with terrific performances, what an overlooked jewel of a film!

I agree, many people seem to write it off as another costume drama romance, but while the romance is there, the film is really more about idealists trying to advance the society by breaking down feudlism and make living better for the common man. If you want romance you will get, but there are so many more interesting layers to this film.

shareAgreed. I certainly wasn't expecting to be as emotionally affected by this film as I was. Far from being "another costume drama romance," this film was beautifully done, hypnotic and haunting, with memorable characters and even a compelling history lesson in there. In my opinion it's one of the best and most tragic love stories ever told. And to think I was initially drawn to it by Hannibal Lector!
