why wasn't this show more popular?

it was very good by network standards

Good question. It seems in 2006, the only scripted shows Americans wanted to watch were crime procedurals for some reason.

American women watch procedurals. I was surprised to learn that primetime, broadcast TV shows are made more with women in mind than men.

Men, OTOH, basically watch sports and Sunday night FOX cartoons. Friday Night Lights was "sports-y" enough to appeal to male audiences. IRL I know a lot of men who liked the show.

Other thing is that the show was interrupted by a writer's strike:

MY FATHER LOVED IT...HE STILL BORES ME ENDLESSLY WITH STORIES FROM THE SHOW.

Well not everyone is a football fan. It's set in a small town so elitist big city people might not have watched it. Plus you have to get through the very early episodes to get hooked and realize it's about so much more than just football.

Oddly enough, I never watched a single episode of this but I did like the movie.

Not sure why this wasn't more popular. Maybe after watching the movie people didn't feel the need to tune in to the TV show. Plus, we had a lot of sports movies to watch like Varsity Blues, The Replacements, Rudy and of course, Friday Night Lights the movie... etc..

Maybe the plot has been done so many times that no one felt the need to watch this show. But it did get 5 seasons, so maybe someone was watching it.

It could be because only those who actually watch the show realize how great it is. Whenever I tell my friends, “you have to watch Friday Night Lights, you’ll love it!,” they are like “a show about high school football?… no thanks.” Lots of people probably don’t know that the show is actually more of an intriguing drama than just about football.
