if it's such a great film how come it's never on tv?

independence day...always on tv
misery...always on tv
fargo...always on tv
the notebook...always on tv
mean girls...always on tv
the dark knight...always on tv

if king kong was such a "masterpiece" as some people in this forum are claiming it to be, then why isn't it on heavy rotation like the films I mentioned?

not such a great film after all, to the point where they can't even sell it for advertising. no one wants to watch it, TiVo it, or dvr it.

It all depends on streaming sales/rentals vs the licensing agreements for broadcast. This film did a HUGE box office when released. It was released at the end of 2005, so they try drag out the streaming rental
sales as long as they can before offering it through cable providers.
It took MANY years before "Titanic" was available
on any cable content providers, but now it's on a couple times a year, for several showings.

This film is wildly fun,
scary and entertaining to
watch -- for both adult-
kids and kid-kids -- though I wouldn't
recommend it for kids under about 9 or 10! I've
seen it running at least several times a year over the past three+ years, so
I'm not sure why you haven't noticed its availability on cable sooner.

If you want to see it now or record it for later viewing, check out the TMC (The Movie Channel) and SHOWTIME schedules.
Checking the broadcast schedule tonight, it
shows that it's being played 56 TIMES through 5/15/16. There must be
one of those showtimes you can record or watch, right? Good luck!!!

In the UK, the Wizard of Oz never surfaced on TV until the mid-70s.

Just sayin'........

Boy -- that takes me back a bit! I TOTALLY LOVED "The Wizard of Oz" as a child -- and, frankly, still do! I come from a theater/music/
entertainment family so we used to frequently sing and perform our imitations of all the characters -- it's sooo ingrained in my psyche, it makes me laugh just to think about it. Thanks for reminding me . . .

I do recall seeing it in the theater which is unquestionably THE WAY to see it. However, it was also rarely shown in the US until the 1970's -- and, even then, very few times until today; it never runs on cable here. Some of the mega-classics just are too precious and/or the licensing is too damned pricey for them to be circulated often. You have to buy it or rent streaming film to see it today.

When I was a kid, it was a BIG DEAL when it ran in the US. They would advertise the hell out of the upcoming broadcast of it -- for a few months ahead. I certainly
remember watching it a few times as a child in the late 1950s thru 1960s. But, I don't recall that it was run
every year. However, we moved to the four edges of the US during my
childhood (about every
4-5 years), so I was in
completely different broadcast regions at various points.

Sorry . . . Back to the new, CGI remake of "King Kong" with Naomi and Friends. I'm quite certain they planned to market it EVERY WHICH WAY BUT LOOSE when they made it, in order to maximize their continued sales and profit. So, I guess it moved into the 'cable' universe in the last two years. Gotta get those bucks!!!

It's always on TV in the UK it's on TV right now

reply

haha are you watching it as well on the syfi channel

reply

My advice is to *never* watch it on SyFy. They cut the best part out of the whole damn movie: the One on One fight with the V-Rex.

Pissed me off so much when I saw that, I couldn't believe it.

this film has been one of the biggest sellers in Universals' DVD/blu ray titles, shifting millions of copies: most fans prefer watching their own discs instead of waiting on TV screenings.

Watching it on TV in UK right now!

reply

AMC has been showing it lately.

reply

Yeah it's on tv all the time.

I'm watching King Kong (2005) now on AMC. The Shawshank Redemption, War of the Worlds, and of course, The Matrix are other movies on cable tv frequently. I have noticed the longer the movie, the shorter the commercial breaks.
