Leviathan vs. Deepstar Six

I've recently watched Leviathan again after many years, maybe even first time since 1990 on cable. I found it to be a decent although not great film. I remember watching the big three of underwater horror films back then. Of the three, this made the best (or to be more accurate, least worst) impression on me. The Abyss was, to me, another example of overrated James Cameron, of which there are far too many. He's done a few fine films, but so many more that I don't like. That was another that basically got hyped because of what was groundbreaking CGI at the time.

Should I re-watch Deepstar Six, or would it be a waste of time? I seem to remember a feeling that that was so cheesy. If I didn't like it the first time, I'm guessing I probably wouldn't like it today, and I don't like to waste limited movie-viewing time on schlock.

Re-watch...I wish i had them both on Blu Ray...Leviathan was more Thing than Alien, Deep star was ok but leviathan was superior imo.

I don't know to what extent your disliking of The Abyss is, or if this even matters to you....

But if you haven't seen the extended version of The Abyss, you might want to check it out, as it makes so much more sense and adds scenes that make it a much darker movie in tone.

As for Deepstar Six, I just re-watched it (actually just re-watched all three movies), and it amazingly wasn't quite as bad as I recalled it to be. Usually with these lower budget movies that try to compete with the bigger releases fail because they get bad actors and have horrible effects....

While the effects definitely still pale in comparison, the acting wasn't bad at all and the movie isn't horribly written either.

I doubt any company would do it, but it really wouldn't be a bad movie to clean up for Blu-ray.

Both were bad

DS6 was more serious, but took a while to get going

Leviathan was way more campy, and just ended up being silly

Edge to Leviathan because it kicked off earlier.

I started to reply to to this and say it was 6 years old. I wonder which one you watched?

Considering that the comment is on this https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0097737/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0 page, I think it's safe to assume that they watched the Leviathan mentioned. 1989 was the year that this leviathan, deep star six, and the abyss came out, so that is also another reason to think that it is the 1989 one that they are talking about.

I'm watching Leviathan right now, the directing is pretty bad and I was shocked to see this director who did his fair share of cheese went onto land the Tombstone gig, the scenes where they think someone is dead or dying and they way they handle this situation without any urgency is laughably bad. These scenes seem like they were sorting out their blocking concentrating on where on the set they would stand and how they would interact with their props and machinery and so on, filmed that and kept it. I noticed Tombstone had an uncredited director so I reckon there's a story there.
