It’s always bothered me they through all that trash and a refrigerator into the ocean during the race and they celebrate this as such a great idea. Wish they could have thought of a better way to get back into the race. Trashing the ocean should have disqualified them.

If a couple of hundred pounds worth of frozen food and the freezer made that much difference in the speed of the boat, why were the unnecessary crew aboard (like Jack's wife and kids and the creepy old dude down below)?
I guess the answer to your question is that they went back for the cooler/freezer (it floats?) after the race and the food itself and cardboard packaging was biodegradable.
