Who was Boothy, relatively?

Can anyone tell me what Boothy's tie-in to the Gilbert family was?

I'm sure it was explained, but apparently I missed it while letting dogs in and out.

Maid, aunt, companion, "companion" ?

I'm watching the movie now. She is an old friend of the mother's. They seem to both be divorcees living together to save on rent. One could read more into it, I suppose.

My impression is that the brownstone was part of Mrs. Gilbert's divorce settlement and that she invited her old pal to move in (I assume Boothy contributes her fair share towards expenses). In fact, there's a made-for-TV sequel of sorts to The Mary Tyler Moore Show in which, after reconnecting with the widowed Mary, Rhoda is invited to share Mary's spacious co-op. One can assume the arrangement is for "happily ever after."

expenses in Manhattan are sick. You have to be wealthy. The two females probably couldn't make it any other way.
