Favourite Sellers Film

What's your favourite Peter Sellers film?
I bet it's a very tough decision, but I think the The Mouse That Roared could stand up there along with Dr. Strangelove, Being There, A Shot in the Dark, The Party and Pink Panther.

If you are interested you can go and vote for your favourite Peter Sellers movie at http://www.petersellersappreciationsociety.com.

It is the site of the official Peter Sellers Appreciation Society and an excellent recourse for Sellers info. You can also take quizzes and join the mailing list.

Can one vote for the Ladykillers? He was wonderful in that one!

Ha ha ha ha! You just said "nuclear". It's "nukular", dummy, the "s" is silent!

Shot in the dark and The Mouse That Roared are my favourite

Kind Hearts and Coronets.

A squid eating dough in a polyethylene bag is fast and bulbous. Got me?

reply

That's Alec Guiness. You may have confused it with The Mouse That Roared because Alec plays multipe parts *seven* as Sellers did in TMTR. By the way I love Kind Hearts...

My two favorites are Being There and The World of Henry Orient but he's done many excellant films.

Those they both pretty bad IMO and Mouse was a dud We had to turn if off after the first 1/2 hr. For that matter mouse is pretty stupid, I don't see the attraction

Dr. StrangeLove, The Mouse That Roared, The Party, his impersonation of "Sidney Wang" in "Murder By Death" and of course "The Magic Christian".
Pity Sellers got carried away with portraying "Clouseau"; for an actor of his format way below his abilities.

The Mouse That Roared
The Ladykillers
I'm All Right Jack
..and pretty well any other film where he isn't allowed to overindulged himself with over the top, cartoony characterization (Kubrick was guilty of this and that's what mars films like Lolita and Dr Strangelove)

Sellers had a heart attack in his thirties on his honeymoon(I think his fourth)
and afterwards he was not as good again(still pretty good). Anyhow portraying
the same character "Clouseau" was easier on him.
Since I put in the first paragraph, I have checked some things out. It was his
second honeymoon with Britt Ekland in Feb. 1964 and also one of his greatest movies "Being There" came much later.

For me, Being There and The Pink Panther are the best. Dr. Strangelove is is in third place.

reply

"Being There" was Mr. Sellers' perfect role in the perfect film, in my opinion, though all of his films are worthwhile. "The Mouse Tbat Roared" is near the top, though, perhaps after that and "The Party." I have to admit I never much cared for the "Pink Panther" films, though.

reply

My favorite, by far, is "The Bobo."

Not the best film he's been in, but probably his best, most complex, & most subtle performance. Certainly one of his most touching roles.

reply

Another multiple role film he did just before he passed on was The Fiendish Plot of Dr. Fu Manchu but it wasn't as good as Dr. Strangelove or The Mouse That Roared. I would have to give the nod to The Pink Panther Strikes Again where he dismounts from the parallel bars and tumbles down the stairs to begin his interrogation of the kidnap victims' house staffmembers.

Being There was also at the top of the list. "I like to watch." "It's very good Eve." "Could you please tell me where I could find a garden to work in."
