I bought you some time

Near the end when Wayne is shot in the leg and Holden removes the bullet,Holden says; " believe it or not i bought you some time ( Wayne- "how much") couple of hours maybe more"

What is the reference. The wound is not that severe. Death from blood loss?

Then at the end it appears Wayne will survive with no problems.

I have not read the book. Did anyone else notice this apparent inconsistency?

Excellent question. I've seen the movie many times and never understood the statement. I hope someone can answer it. BTW, one of my favorite Duke movies!

wayne's character will need medical attention for his wound. he is the only one in the film who gets back in the saddle right away.

I have also puzzled over this line since I first saw the movie in 1959. I have come to conclude that it means that Wayne will be able to ride for a while before complications from his wound set in, i.e., he will be able to get away.

I personally think that Holden meant Wayne was going on a suicide mission by leading the troops further into enemy territory, and was gonna get shot anyhow.

reply

Agree w/ the above... He's gonna die soon anyway, here's a couple hours you earned courtesy of your Regimental Surgeon. /RZ

I agree with your interpretation.

Holden/Kendall was telling Wayne/Marlowe that he would be able to continue his escape from the Confederate forces for a few hours, at which time he would need further medical attention. (They discussed using tree moss to treat his wound.)

reply

Well, let me see

Kendall got the bullet out, a round ball, probably from a pistol, .44 cal, didn't hit a bone, good thing, would have shattered it,

No antibiotics to speak of, Just poured some whiskey on it, wrap it up, and hope for the best.

His biggest problem would be infection, that's what killed most of the wounded in the CW

Only had 25 or so miles to BatonRouge, and another medical station

So infection and loss of blood would be the biggest fear
