Depeche Mode

Had a good debate with a few people at a bar last night about 80's Depeche vs modern day Depeche and lets just say I was losing the battle. I am a huge fan of Depeche from Ultra 1997 and on even though Violator and SOFAD are two of my faves. Anyway to me you cant compare, I just love the new stuff especially playing the angel from 2005 which I think is their best album by a landslide. Anyone out there agree?????

I had all dms singles from the 80's with their 12" inch counterparts. Their remixes of the 80's tracks I thought were way better then their actual tracks and their remixes now kinda blows but their new album versions of songs now I like way better then their 80's album material. Tracks like Barrel of a gun, it's no good, when the body speaks, dream on, goodnight lovers, suffer well, a pain that I am used to, John the Revelator, precious, lilian, angel and yous should be higher I think are light years ahead of the material from the 80's.

I think their early 80's stuff is fantastic, even though I like them better when Vince Clark left (giving us Erasure).

Now I do like Ultra and Violator but its not their best, IMHO

I hear you, I do have a soft spot for Speak and Spell but the time after that until Depeche got that sort of dark goth more like image say circa 1986-87, I just could care for the albums in between. Construction Time again to me is painful to listen too now although I loved it way back in the day....Thanks for you response!!!

I wouldn't really call anything from 2005 "new".

I didn't like them much after Clarke left, except that cover version of Route 66.

80's Mode all the way, though they remain a great band and produce a few awesome tracks with each album.
