The unsung sideman


How many great film scores have themes or melodies that are so distinct because of the way the musicians expertly execute the composer's ideas.

I think of Uan Rasey's trumpet on Goldsmith's Chinatown score; the stellar alto sax work by Ronnie Lang on Bernard Herrmann's Taxi Driver; and altoist Dan Higgins' work on John Williams music from Catch Me If You Can.

Pat Matheny plays beautiful acoustic guitar on another Goldsmith classic from 1983, Under Fire.
