1, 2, and 3 Dimensional Characterization: How Do You Tell Them Apart

One test that has often been used is, do you know the character's thoughts? Granted that is a little facile and there are many debatable cases, but it is a starting point. As I said above, the distinction is between flat and round characters, i.e. two-dimensional and three-dimensional. There is no such thing as a one-dimensional character. You cannot draw a portrait if you have only length and no width.

1-Dimensional are as basic as they can get. You've seen them a bunch of time before, and you can even predict what they'll do.

2-Dimensional have personalities that you can't just describe in one word.

3-Dimensional require essays to be analysed. Their actions don't make sense to the audience at first sight.
