What does 'Meaning' mean?

I mean, in terms of Film as a subject. Film History I can understand. It's a broad subject but understandable. But is 'Meaning' referring to the meaning of film as in: to the world, to society, as entertainment, enlightenment, enrichment, making money, stimulating, teaching, etc. or are we supposed to comment on the meaning of specific films and stories?
I suppose if the latter, it would say 'Film's Meanings'. You may think I'm being silly but does anyone have an idea?

Perhaps a better word would have been "message".

As the board refers to the history of film-making and the language of cinema,I took it to refer not so much to the meaning of specific films but how film language such as point of view shots or flashbacks were used to convey a particularly meaning.

I can't help but be reminded of the story of the blind men trying to describe an elephant. I suppose that the true meaning of "meaning" will have as many variants as there are people.
